Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Will Japan save Nintendo and the Wii U like they did with the 3DS?

On topic. It's Japan line up is killer, so it might do OK there.

That has always been the big question about Wii U.

Will western third parties support it ? or they will ignore it when PS4/X720 launches ?

None of them can afford to ignore it after the PS4 and 720 launch. The sales of ZombiU, Assassin's Creed III, possibly Arkham City, Black Ops 2, Rayman Legends and Aliens Colonial Marines will show that there's a market for games aimed at the 'hardcore' demographic. Add to that the fact that the U is going to have a similar architecture to the PS4 and 720 so it'll be easy to port between all 3 consoles and the fact that it's going to have an installed userbase anywhere between 10 and 15m and you'll see third parties in the West that don't want to haemorrage money supporting the Wii U.

You've also got to take into account that development for the Wii U is going to be a great deal cheaper - they're all going to have to pay for licences for the likes of Havok middleware, Autodesk middleware and the Unity 4 Engine when developing for the PS4 and 720. That's tens of thousands of pounds spent on each PS4 and 720 dev kit which comes free out of the box for U SKUs.

And does the Wii U really need saving..? They're in really short supply over here in the UK thanks to Nintendo in their infinite wisdom only giving us 40,000 units for launch. I suspect that supplies here and in the States will be constrained in favour of Japan. It's not every day that a console launches over there with a game from the second biggest franchise in the country and a Beta for the first biggest franchise in the country.

Wow. This is worse then vita. It has been one week and it needs saving?

One more thing to complete my year = senran kagura localization =D

The WiiU will be fine, i seem to remember everybody pressing the panic button early in the 3DSs life..it got there in the end. Both WiiU and 3DS wont beat their predecessors, but they both will sell respectable numbers. I have a feeling Microsoft might top next gen, but who cares?? i enjoy the heck out of my WiiU regardless of what it sells, if it doesnt sell so well so be it.. it wont destroy Nintendo or anything.

I think because the Wii U haven't reach the madness the Wii had at launch a lot of people think the system is in "trouble" which is stupid since the Wii U did some good number in America. It's true the Wii U didn't sold well in Europe at launch but there a heavy rumors about manufacturing issues and apparently some small retailers won't have big stock numbers throughout the rest of year (the latter is based on users comments on gaming sites).

Nintendo and PC gamer

ppl just need to give a system time to hit its stride and show its abilities to the world. it seems alot of ppl are just so eager to condemn a system so early on in its life for no damn reason, but to pound there chest to show its not selling a ton right away. things are different now in the states and around the world, the economy mainly the reason. for ppl being more careful with there money and the same will be the case for the next xbox and playstation systems. just give it a rest for awhile and enjoy games in general

The Wii U doesn't need saving. It will do decently until E3 2013, where it will start to pick up in sales after more big games are announced for it. I will agree that the marketing needs to improve, needs to showcase more hardcore games, and must explain to consumers that the Wii U is its own system, not an add on to the Wii. However, what makes you think a high price is the problem? Maybe to consumers that don't know the different between it an the current generation of consoles, but that will be fixed once the next Xbox and PS4 come out.

Add me! :)

Week two with partial numbers in is hardly the time to panic and call a console dead, numbers so far are not far off of what Wii's were if you look back at actual numbers. Given the different economic climates of the two times, this is about all that could be expected.

I am loving my time with the WiiU, it is a fun platform with a lot of games to get through. As long as WiiU comes close to sales projections on the year it will be just fine. Doom and gloom about the 3DS did not kill it, and it had a worse launch in terms of bugs and software available.

Your right. What people don't get is it is very rare for systems to sell out anyway. In my area ps3, 3ds and vita had not sold out and look at them now. Well minus the vita. Selling out could be due to demand but it could also mean there are shortages and it may not sell as many as people think.

If a console has sold out consistently over the first year it is usually either because of supply or it has done something which made the world go mad. Eventually things pick up. While I think 360 sold well early on I had heard claims from people that microsoft were manipulating stock to make it seem like demand was higher then what it was.

But I am unsure if that is the case. If anyone would be willing to correct me on this. Just things I heard from people back then.

I do not see Wii U selling more than 10 million lifetime in Japan.

So I'm not sure how much Japan can really do...Sony is in an even worse position due to their lack of 1st party strength.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

I think it's a pretty well known fact that ppl in the west are cheap. The cheapest system is what usualy sells the most. So the WiiU being the most expensive system out there I'm not surprised to see how much it's selling. I think it's a fine number. When Ps4 and Xbox8 will come out and the WiiU will suddenly be the cheapest, I expect things to turn around.
