The Super Sayian scale is shit though, it's not really like they are equal in power, let this nerd give you the details. The SS mode works as a power booster, so for example, it works more like SSx1 about 50x(just making up a number) and SSx2 like x100(again, just making it up) and so on and so. So a grown Goku in his normal mode can actually fight and kick the asses of kids in SS mode(as can his stubborn home planet prince of course), it's the chi density and how much you can boost it. That's why training is still very important, you can't just go SS and win by default.
