Forums - Gaming Discussion - PSN/XBLA next generation changes??

If their is something that I would not have predicted last generation is how popular and great the games would become on PSN/XBLA.  We basically came from games like Ecco the dolphin/Uno to games like Journey/Spelunky/Unfinished Swan/Fez/Mark of the ninja/Tony Hawk HD etc..

but I believe their is still a lot of things they can do to make it even more popular and better

-First of all, make it more open for devs (and cheaper) to put games on XBLA/PSN...
- More deals!
- Game prices going down in time...  We are so used that an retail game price goes down around 50% in a year so why does PSN/XBLA games hardly change in price? or dlc?  (and lets not start about Games on demand X_X)..

Anyway what would you like to see? (changes?)

I would say have prices drop over time and have a sale now and then like Steam does.

Next gen i assume a XBLA game would appear on the 360 as well as its successor. Appealing to 2 console userbases at the same time.

I would hope MS would adopt a PS Plus approach and give away old XBLA games per month that have DLC to offset giving it away in the first place.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

your lack of braid forces me to disapprove this thread..

devs need to control their own pricing (same goes for disc based too) so they can freely add sales or drop the prices when they want to.  Also, psn at least, needs a wish list feature, the ability to allow user reviews in addition to the 5 star rating, a video/screenshot (as appropriate for the content) should be manditory (none of this written discription BS), games also need to be given more love (downloadable codes at retail perhaps, advertisement in general, more in the way of "compilation" disc based games), a gifting system (because the wii secret santa thread was awesome in it's day), a game rental option, a used game resale capability, and a really really low cost option for devs to patch their games.

..i'm sure there is more but i'm running out of steam.

They actually need to take a cue from Nintendo, surprisingly, and allow the developers/publishers to set their own prices. Tiered pricing, just like on retail shelves is a broken idea that benefits no one. Instead of every new PSN game launching at $10 or $15, allow those that made the game to price it according to its budget at any odd number that fits. Same goes for XBLA.

For next gen, if I buy a Playstation or Xbox, I better be able to sign in and download all of the games I paid for on PS3 and 360. If those purchases don't transfer over, they're not getting my money.

Make all new indie games visible and rankable. Allow gamers to see what's available, and let others know exactly what they're getting. Perhaps even add a "User Review" section along with a star rating system.

Streaming options. Some people either don't have the HDD space, or the patience to sit through downloads and installs. For those with fast enough internet speeds, give them the option to stream games instead of download them at the same price. Sony's purchase of Gaikai should be leading the way on this. I hope they do well with it.

Digital versions of retail games need to be cheaper, no excuses. Put loyalties to physical stores on the side, because gamers deserve better when they don't have actual physical ownership of the game. It costs the companies less to offer it digitally in many ways, so the savings need to be passed onto us. Make it happen.

Patches need to be free. Not $10K.

I'm sure I could think of more with time, but that's a good start.

1. Steam like sales.
2. More PS+ like subscriptions, Music Unlimited, Video Unlimited etc

Well their are so many games... I just named some of the recent ones :).

I think most of your points are already being addressed to some extent. Looking solely at the ps3, you tend to see more deals nowdays than in the early days of the consoles and the number of deals available to you are hugely greater if you have ps+. I think this structure will be carried on with the ps4 and I dont really think it needs that much changing.

I think sony are already going in the direction of making games more accessible to emerging developers. There is the pub fund, and sony has considerably reduced the cost of getting PS Vita dev kits in order to make it more accessible to developers and Im sure the same will happen with the ps4. With the rumoured more pc-friendly ps4 and lower dev kits I think this is the way forward.

Game prices online are a major issue but as the market share for everything shifts from retail to online, I actually think we are more likely to see a more retail-type system being adopted by both MS and Sony.

1. Video streaming on Video Unlimited and a subscription plan.

2. Day one digital downloads to be the norm.

(This is something I love about vita. Every game that ever comes out is right there ready to download. Makes finding something new to play a lot easier, and i don't have to wait 5 - 7 days for it to be delivered.)

3. Gifting to friends.

(I have a lot of friends that are not as well off as me. I would love to be able to gift them games or gift cards right to their account.)

4. Game Streaming

(IMO next gen consoles need a SSD. It is highly unlikely that PS4 will be B/C with PS3. These two things make me really anticipate a streaming service. Sure that would mean a hit in video quality, but just like with tv and movies, some just don't matter what definition they are IMO.)

5. Looser DRM

I have tree rooms with PS3's that I use (living, family, bedroom). Some content I know I will come back to again and again, and it is not worth wasting the bandwidth multiple times to stream it. I would love to be able to download it to one of my PS's and stream it to the others, or transfer it via adhoc.

6. A standard pricing structure.

Example
day 1 59.99
6 months 39.99
1 year 29.99
2 years 19.99
5 years 9.99
10 years 4.99

KBG29 on PSN&XBL

i only know the PSN side but i really like the online,i think we will all be paying subs next gen probably for a service,i hope they thro some movie rentals in with it too

with unlimited download now and not being a right up to the minute type of gamer i could probably get by with a lot of digital buys now as they are quite reasonable
