Is the Wii U truly next gen? (Tech wise)

I agree, a lot people like to bash a system way too quickly. I imagine tomorrow we'll see a bunch of articles saying "Wii U is not next gen" or "Nintendo is just catching up" and that BS. People like to hate different things, if they don't adapt in a second that means it sucks (I have seen that on this site).

New consoles always get older ports, it's the most common thing in videogames, so I don't know what's all the bitching about, guess most people that hate on the system started gaming this gen.

i agree with the OP

Power-wise it isn't "truly next-gen".(From what I've seen)
But since it comes after the 7th gen Wii, it is 8th gen.

Yeah in time we´ll see games that do a much better job.

But there´s one small peculiarity here, at least if I remember correctly...everytime a new console was released, there was at least one launch game that was clearly above what its last gen counterparts were able to produce. It´s not the case with the Wii U, there isn´t a single launch game that isn´t possible for the 360/PS3, so that´s probably distorting some views.

I believed that.  I thought Kameo was that launch game that showcased graphics light years beyond what the Xbox was capable of.  Then, somebody on this site showed a video of Kameo running on the original Xbox and it was stunning.  It's like the Xbox was cut short to make way for the 360.  Aside from that, what did we have?  Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, Perfect Dark Zero, Call of Duty 2, etc.  all looked doable on the Xbox 1.

New console equals new generation. It's always been that way.
Except for graphic whores who think that is the only thing in gaming.
People are paranoid that Wii U will outsell the other consoles so would rather just boot it out of the "next generation" race.......so pathetic.

When it comes to a new gen people expect a huge leap in graphics, personally I don't consider it next gen but I have nothing against Nintendo fans calling it that.

* waiting for all the hate replies* :/

Uhhh...., well, isn't it next gen because it's simply the next generation of consoles? Why do gamers always make things so complicated?

In your mind you are overestimating what the next gen will be.

Look at Star wars 1313 PC footage. Thats what next-gen is. I'm pretty sure the Wii U can handle it, even if in a lesser degree.

Reasons why:
1. Graphics are reaching the maximum detail that can be perceived by the human eye and brain.
2. Theres a global crisis, buying power has declined, consumers are not willing to pay as much for gaming systems (high-end parts are expensive).
3. In an atempt to gather more sales, companies are tapping into a more casual gamer with devices as kinect, move, Wii gamepad, etc. These will come bundled to ensure the user base has great acess to them and stimulate development with them in mind. This raises the cost of the overall product.
4. Development costs would skyrocket with very powerful machines. The games would be few and alot more expensive than current ones. This is not good for the market because of 2.

For these reasons, next gen wont be the kind of leap we have grown used to, and i still believe Nintendo made a genius decision and has jumped ahead of the competition. We will know for sure when we see the new games for the Xbox720/PS4 and the Wii U.

People have been saying that for literally over a hundred years and time after time they are proven wrong. It will still be decades before even CGI can pixel for pixel replicate the real world.

guys i know its an 8th gen console because of when it releases. that goes without saying.

The Wii U was described as 90% of the PS3 by a developer. It is part of a next generation of consoles but it isn't anything but current generation in terms of performance. So if you push the former it is and if you push the latter it isn't.

Tease.
