Forums - Gaming Discussion - Can the ‘poor’ performance of the Vita kill third party support for Sony’s PS4?

No.

The Vita is what it is, but that has nothing to do with home consoles. The vita just means that there wouldnt be any support for the next Sony handheld. Which is why there won't be one.

This is most certainly true! It will all be moved to Tv/mobile after the Vita.

Your links are broken.

OT: PS3 is still getting amazing support, no reason to think this won't carry over to a much more developer-friendly PS4. Actually I think PS3 support might the thing that could hurt the PS4. When is time for developers to move on? Can Sony's 1st party PS4 exclusives move enough hardware to make 3rd parties move on from the PS3? It's all up to Sony.

Vita is failing miserably right now. I think the reason for this is that many devs are too busy developing for multiple platforms. 3DS + DS + PSP + PS3 + 360 + PS4 + 720. They just don't have time for the Vita. So they end up releasing games on only a 5-month development cycle. It will get better over time for Vita.

I actually agree that if anything PS3 will hurt PS4 developement if PS4 fails to sell well initially. The main reason being the big user base that is guranteed to keep buying goood quality 3rd party titles.

Doesn't this occur at the end of each generation/beginning of a new (for every console)???...and the ps3 userbase will be nowhere near the size of the ps2's (was last gen)

No, PS consoles have always had a high attach rate that's all that will matter to 3rd party devs.

The failure of the PS-Vita, along with the PSP and PS3 not being market leading consoles, will have some impact on how third party publishers approach the PS4 but it won't kill off support for the platform ...

Essentially, with the PS3 most third party publishers allocated most of their best teams to producing PS3 games (for most of their biggest franchises) before the PS3 launched. With the PS4 I would expect publishers to be a lot more platform agnostic and wait for sales before they throw strong support behind any one console.

I think everybody knows psp was the worst playstation system. Sony handhelds have never done as well as nintendo. I still think third parties will throw support at sony but I disagree with a lot in this thread. People are becoming wary of sony systems after ps3 and vita's slow start. So yes it will have a negative impact on them.

One more thing to complete my year = senran kagura localization =D

I hate when people say Vita's price is problem..It isnt. People are willing to spend anything as long as the value matches or xxceeds the asking price. Look the Apple devices. Vita has lots of problem being a very very small target audience. Removing kids from the equation was a big mistake. No, PS4 will not suffer. Alot of developers are wedging there bets on PS4/360. They cant survive not supporing PS4 and Wii U

This shit... this is the problem. People think this is actually true.

It was true for the 3DS, and that had a fair library in its launch window compared to Vita's.

That Apple example was very uh...Apples and Oranges.

People were still buying the 3DS at $250 more than they are the Vita despite the Vita having the superior first year library. A lot of it comes down to price, silly forced proprietary memory, but also brand power. The Playstation brand has been greatly diminished over the last 6 years and has been climbing uphill ever since the PS3.

Sony has never been good at handheld consoles, in my opinion they should stop producing them and focuses only on home consoles.

PS4 will be as good as 720 regarding third party support.

they had 2 and the first one was a success (although not an overwhelming one) ..

PSP sold more than 70M units. The second best result for a non-Nintendo handheld was Game Gear with 8M. So it's a very good result.

If anything, this'll only mean that PS4 will get fewer 3rd party exclusives. But that's probably true for the entire industry; games costs too much to make these days that devs want to sell as many copies as possible, and therefore selling on more consoles.

Western developers probably won't care about the failing Vita, whereas Japanese dittos might.
