Actually not so very very true at all. Apple simply had a head start in the tablet market.

Just a few days ago, IDC released new numbers showing that during the last quarter alone, Apple's share of the tablet market has dropped over 15%, from 65 percent to 50, while sales of Android tablets greatly increased and are now at about 40%.

So it might be just a matter of 3-6 months until Android rules the tablet market as well.

really? i thought andriod tablet sales were abymsal, this is good news to hear. you know how many andriod tablets were sold?

Well... Not exactly, no. :(

That's because the 40% android market share that I mentioned earlier was actually just an estimate - while the article I quoted mentions that Android tablets were on the rise in the third quarter, it doesn't actually mention the overall Android market share; instead the numbers they mention are market shares of various manufacturers. In case of companies like Amazon (9% market share), it's clear every tablet they sell is an Android device, but in case of the companies like Samsung (18.4% market share) or ASUS, I wasn't sure if those were exclusively Android devices.

They mention that Apple (=the iPad) has dropped to 50% market share,  so I simply made a conservative estimate of 40% market share for Android and 10% for "others" - whatever that might be, since I cannot think of any other tablet platform that was really relevant in the third quarter, Windows 8/Windows RT devices weren't available back then. So the actual Android market share might be even higher.

The article mentions overall numbers though, 27.8 million tablets in the third quarter. Apples 50.4% market share equates to 14.0 million iPads sold, and my estimate of 40% Android market share would equate to 11.12 million devices.

Not enough troll posts in this apple thread. VGChartz, I am disappoint.

OT: Spikes in sales at release VS slow and steady Android? Apple fans are hardcore!

There have been many articles stating that android, or specifically Samsung, have caught up to, or are over taking Apple in both tablets and phones for the last reported quarter (July - September). So Apple's market share of tablets has not dropped to 50% overall, but only for that 3 month period (same for phones). The drop was directly related to rumours of a new iPad(s) being released in the fall. Because of this I believe the numbers for July - September are abnormally low as customers were waiting to see the new products, and no one should read too much into those sales numbers. Just as the upcoming October - December numbers are very likely to be abnormally high, and should not be evaluated on their own. Comparing the numbers for 2012 year end should give us a better picture of how each manufacturer is really doing.

In the absence of evidence to the contrary, always assume you have the upper hand.

NNID = RangerOne

I don't get the whole IPad thing. I'm old and not that addicted to my computer/phone. I don't need that many devices.

That's like compare sales of iPhone vs. Galaxy... you know what sells wayyyyyyy more.

Anyway iPad mimi is a better product then Nexus 7.

I'd say that Android is more than competing in the tablet space. As an iOS user, I tend to stay within that ecosystem. It has all my apps, my stored info, and is tailored for my personal needs.

With that said, I'd buy a Nexus 7 before an iPad Mini. It's specced better, it's 60% of the price, and it's a damned fine tablet.

Apple completely underwhelmed me with the Mini. If it was specced as-is, it should be $249 (Google is selling the Nexus 7 at cost, I don't expect Apple to do the same). Shit, I'd even begrudgingly accept it at $299.

But $329? Are you kidding me?

Honestly, I find the mini far more fairly priced than the normal iPad (then again, my mindset with iPads is still extremely out of date, every time I see one, I'm amazed by how cheap it is... always expecting them to be $100-$150 more).

I'd be interested to see how the mini plays out when it goes into multiple generations. Personally, I expect that there will only ever be one generation of the iPad mini for sale, and that it's RRP will probably drop by $20-$30 a year. Versus having two generations out, one sticking at $329, the other having significant discount.

What do you expect it's an apple, they are all the rage these days. I would still get nexus 7 since it offers similar performance to ipad mini but is significantly cheaper (nexus 7 32gb~ £199 Vs. ipad mini 32gb~ £349!)

Anyways....I keep seeing ads about ipad4 and ipad mini...arent they same or different o.O?

The iPad 4 is the full 9.7" tablet with a monster A6 chip in it. The iPad Mini is basically the iPad 2 with a smaller 7.8" screen.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

Don't see the need for the iPad mini, especially at that price. I already have a nexus 7, (posting from it right now in fact!) for less tan half the price of an iPad. And while its probably not as flexible and practical as iPad, it does everything I would need a tablet for just fine; game, movies, magazines, books. Plus it android supports Roms unlike apple which is huge for me. I just use my laptop for the more practical functionality. I see the tablet more as an entertainment device for traveling, in which case you generally don't even need all the functionality iPad offers.

I'm kinda new here but....WTF?

I don't think apple will ever exceed Nintendo Wii sales...EVER. You might want to recount that iphone sales. You have to remember that Wii is only ONE unit. Iphone has iphone 1, 2, 3, 3gs, 4, 4s, 5 & soon to be 5s. Ipad has 1, 2, 3 and soon to be 4. And now mini pad.

So, we can now safely say that Nintendo will still be crowned king of sales for ONE unit.
