Honestly that isn't so impressive. The two biggest cities here already have 500 mbps fiber internet for some 2 years and I live on a developing country... however I always found internet speeds on the USA a bit underwhelming compared to the far east or Europe.

And an ironic yay for Google now really knowing everything from these poor citizens...

If in chicago, I know this will make comcast and the like compete. Make my prices go down and speed go up. So I most likely won't go with google but you know comcast will not be far behind or atleast cheapen the faster speeds. Google violates to many privacy laws for me.

I love that theyre trying to make the internet faster. But Google knowing EVERYTHING about me? Sounds like Deus Ex type of thing.

Vigin has been laying down fibre optic cables yes... they don't currently offer any more than 100Mb/s for average customers though. The infrastructure is going to be there to supply Gb connections at least (assuming you have fibre cabling all the way up to your house, rather than just the trunk line in the street... I would presume when it's possible to get 1Gb plans they have to come out and change the connecting cable)

BT is also laying fibre cables I think (BT infinity is advertised as fibre optic anyway)
