Forums - Sony Discussion - How bad is the PSV really doing vs the PSP? (actual numbers within)

I agree that Vita and 3DS sold similarly in America pre-price cut. Look at VGChartz's numbers for weeks 5 through 19 for both consoles (3DS on left, Vita right):

Week 20 was the price cut week. Sure, 3DS wound up with a considerably larger install base after 19 weeks, but that was mostly due to its stronger launch and occassional big week (see week 13 at 31k, that's Ocarina 3D week). Week-to-week, their sales were generally quite close.

I think Vita's western sales are not that bad, honestly. It's a countdown till sales improve to healthy levels for me.

1 - The market changed completely. It obviously not going to be a new PSP, same way 3DS will never be the new DS

2 - There's a bunch of games that goes well with the tastes of the standard western player, including big franchises. Exactly what's lacking in Japan, big games that goes well with the masses.

I think too early to make any rash calls on future of PSV. The 3DS needed a holiday season to get back in shape after the botched launch window. It just took a few titles to turn the momemtum in the 3DS favor and then they have kept up with software support not letting go of that momentum.

The PSV can get some momemtum from Assassin's Creed 3 - Liberation, possibly some bump from Black Ops Declassified whenver that comes out and then it will be up to Sony to make sure that once that momentum is generated, they keep it fueled with frequent release of quality titles.

I should have explained that better. Im talking Weekly sales, not total numbers.

Look at the Weeks before the 3DS pricecut. The line for 3DS looks very, very similar to the Vita line. Particularly so in America and Europe. In Japan (and thus WW), the 3DS is doing way better.

For 10 Weeks before the cut, aside from the OoT bump for 3DS, sales look really similar. Maybe its just the graph though. What were the totals for each for the 10 Weeks leading up to the cut?

US only?

All 4. JP, EU, US and WW if its not too much trouble? Similar to what the_dengle did.

Id do it myself, but Im on my phone.

3DS has really nice margin per device and PSV does not.

Do you have a source for that?  Not because I'm doubting what you're saying, just because I'm genuinely interested.  I've seen a few people around here say that Sony sell the Vita for a slight loss and try to make it back up through the memory cards, but I'm just interested exactly how much they're losing on every system.

No, I don't have clarification on exactly what the margin is or is not. However, I know LeoJ and others have posted quotes from Sony saying its profitable. I personally think the base model is pretty much even with memory making the profit while the 3G model is profitable even without a memory sale. Probably would also depend on the bundle/price as its mostly being bundled now.

Either way, my point was that the 3DS had a major profit margin at launch and we know of many quotes where Nintendo said post-price cut that it is now losing money but will be profitable very soon, which leads me to think its wasn't much of a loss.

I'd like to see those links.  Last one I saw it still had a narrow loss.

People tell me all current Playstation products are profitable (PS Vita, PS3, PS2 and PSP). Yet SCE reported a 1.2 billion USD loss in 2011.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Its rumored that a whole bunch of that includes Vita and PS4 R&D. As I said though, only rumored so...

I understand the predicament Vita is in at the moment but I would suggest a title be shown some neutrality along the lines of "How does the Vita fare in sales in comparison to its predecessor/competition?"

Thanks kow.

Surprised how similar the 2 are in US pre 3DS cut. Didnt realise until this thread. Looking at how much Nintendo have had to do to get sales just ALRIGHT now... The future sure is bleak for Vita.

Japan, the 3DS just curbstomps it and Europe is a pretty easy win too.

How bad is the PSV really doing ?

Sales are poor, of course. But the question for me is how much money costs Sony to manufacture each PSV ?

I remember reading an article from Eurogamer which said total costs were $160 but is sold for $249. If that's true, then Sony can handle the poor sale.

Vita sales are about 45~50 weekly.
