Forums - Gaming Discussion - Mobile gaming isn’t a threat to traditional games industry

DICE GM Karl Magnus Troedsson doesn’t believe mobiles are a threat to the consoles business, despite some industry professionals’ opinions.

“People are generally correct that things are changing, and a lot of people in this industry are acknowledging that – some people don’t want to see it, though,” Troedsson, told Edge. “But I would also say the people who are painting such a grim picture of where we’re going are wrong.”

Troedsson instead believes the broadening of available platforms will benefit the industry.

“Yes, people are playing more on their mobile devices, but I don’t see people playing on other SKUs as a problem for triple-A developers, it’s actually the contrary,” he said. “I think people engaging in any kind of gaming is good for all games, because it means that people will play more.

“I consider myself to be a hardcore, triple-A kind of player, and I definitely play more on my mobile devices now, but I don’t play less on my other devices as a result. When I’m home, I want to play games with the absolute most hi-def, best audio, best visuals that I can get out of a gaming session. And that will come from dedicated hardware or a very high-end PC.”

He also feels consoles in the home will remain the main way people will game.

“There will always be a demand for games that require a lot of hardware to deliver a really hi-def experience,” he said. “Whether that will be delivered by CPUs and memory sitting in your room, or somewhere else, I don’t know. Probably both. But one thing is for sure, people will continue to want to play the best-looking games out there.”

Karl is blind. It may not totally kill it off, and consoles may make a return eventually, but mobile gaming has definintely made a dent. There is no denying it, especially in the west.

no, especially in the east - in Japan the mobile (and handheld) gaming craze began way before the west began shifting to that

we'll know for sure after this "Portable" gen is done which wont be until another 5-6 years. (Unless they release a tablet that can dish out HD graphics o.o).

iPad 3 has better resolution than an HDTV. It has beyond HD graphics.

I think we'll know for sure how much mobile gaming has affected console gaming by the end of 2014. How 3DS and Vita are doing at that point compared to DS and PSP is huge. How the next gen of consoles starts compared to their predecessors is a good indication, too.

It will eventually kill the protable gaming, but it wont impact PC and Console gaming too much. At least I hope it wont.

Exactly this.

He implied that traditional handheld gaming will take place on smartphones while home consoles won't be affected. He never said anything about dedicated handhelds.

Edit: Hmm... I might have to take some of that back, since he only mentioned "mobile devices".

I almost decided not to get a 3DS because of my iPhone

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

People who usually dont play games are now playing games, the entire industry's changed, whether this is good or bad, we'll know for sure after this "Portable" gen is done which wont be until another 5-6 years.

But people who used to rarely play games aren't going to be buying consoles anymore.

So why don't PCs harm home consoles if smartphones are a threat to dedicated handhelds. The only people that believe handhelds are in trouble are people that don't even play them to begin with. If they did then they would know Mario, Pokemon, Monster Hunter, etc sell handhelds which is what smartphones do not have.

mobile games are not even the same market. why don't people understand that?
mobile games are time wasters. they are for people who take their phone to work and want something to do for their 30 minute break. no one who has an xbox is saying " oh looks like I can play games on my phone better get rid of xbox"
they are 2 different markets. I would bet more consoles are sold next gen then this gen.
