Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Iwata: Wii U/3DS will cater to core gamers first, mass market second

lulz - so they want to emulate the 3DS strategy that brought them their first losses ever.  g'luck with that.

"Moreover, regrettably, what we prioritised in order to reach out to the new audience was a bit too far from what we prioritised for those who play games as their hobby. Consequently, we presume some people felt that the Wii was not a game system for them or they were not willing to play with the Wii even though some compelling games had been released."

they guys that think your system is a kiddy system will still think it's a kiddy system and won't buy your products.  you'll never get the COD audience without drastically changing your (corporate) personality.

But at the same time they also lost a good share of their market to the competition, and gave them too much footing to be comfortable about it, all the while alienating a large market.

Nintendo can get the casuals at the snap of a finger, they need not even worry about it.

Once they secure the core, they just need to snap their fingers again.

not likely.  they couldn't even keep them entertained for the life of the wii how can you possibly think it is that easy to recapture them.  the casuals are far more fickel and unpredicable from the core.  far harder to capture -- for anyone.

Nah, kitler that's not a fair conclusion. Like Stefan.de.Machtige said, Nintendo made a choice (due to their limited resources): it was either go gung ho on the WiiU, or keep sustaining the Wii, pumping out the casual stuff. They went with the WiiU, so the Wii's decline is not something they couldn't have prevented.

In other words, we're going back to our Gamecube norms and only making games we want to see made. Wii U setting Nintendo up for failure and obscurity confirmed.

Pixel Art can be fun.

No, it's not that at all.

The cube did not have the differentiation recipe set out properly. They had the right vision, just the wrong tools. To differentiate, they butchered their main IPs (mario's jetpack, Luigi with a vaccuum, you know, the Nintendo DIFFERENCE). With the Wii, they actually got things right. They managed to cater and attract the blue market they were looking for.

The WiiU is a completely different story. Look at it as a hybrid between the Cube and the Wii, minus the failed Cube attempts at reaching the blue ocean.

It's a recipe for success imho.

And it's not the games they want to see made, it's the games they believe the "skilled players" are longing for. They're doing well with the 3DS, the strategy is right. Had the 3DS been profitable, we wouldn't even be doubting this.

Well... I thought Luigi's Mansion was quite good...

Meh, it was okay. But it certainly wasn't a Brain Age, a Nintendogs or a NSMB!

Woh, woh, woh! LM is way better than Brain Age or Nintendogs!

"Iwata explained, it decided not to flood the 3DS's early release slate with casual games ... It intends to take a similar approach with the Wii U when it launches later this year."

So the Wii U will be a red ocean product?

I'm talking about sales Py! (i.e. mass appeal, the aim after all)
