Second, if Dad wants the iPad x for work, then junior can't play games on the TV (in other words, multi-functionality) here is a problem. Third, at some point, annual replacement will slow or stall. Many of the tablets are bought by businesses/firms for which an annual update is an unwarranted, unnecessary or unsupportable expense. Related to that, how much would people be willing to spend on gaming for a unit that is not their own. (For example, I type this on a work-purchased iPad2. There is no plan to buy iPad3s. I also refrain from buying games for something that I don't own (I have spent $2 in apps in a year). Finally, if you read those comments, they were long term conjecture. I would think that once the yearly increases in sales for tablet devices starts to slow, and a real alternative to iPad emerges, the focus will be on reducing prices, not enhancing hardware.
Google predicted that is essentially going to start happening in the smart phone market this year - prices coming down, more bang for buck. I don't think tablets will be that far off.
The iPad is no threat to console gaming. The control options are just not good enough to handle many gaming genres.
Signature goes here!
The graphics in the IPad games look far inferior to 7th generation console games. Only 9.7 inch screen on IPads compared to 1080p graphics on 60 inch+ HD TV screens.

Consoles have enough power to be able to run good games but they don't replace desktops |
they are trying too (ms and sony at least) consoles right now though do not perform the internet and office funtions of a pc, tablets do. Very different. its more like an evolution, pc-laptop-tablet. Laptops how ever were limited as they did not have good cost to power ratio compared to pcs. for tablets/smartphones it may not matter as people will buy them with phone contracts making the price appear better.
iPad 3 is actually not even close to Xbox 360 yet.
1GhZ Dual Core vs 3GhZ Tri-Core.
There's a big difference there. By the time the iPad 5 catches up, we'd already have new systems that are cutting-edge.
Let's just say that consoles do get replaced by tablets....
Who is in a good position to adjust?
Nintendo? They got experience with portables, but they've never made computers before.
Microsoft? They don't really make hardware. Xbox 360 is the only exception. So we can rule MS out.
Sony? Yes! They already make tablets. If consoles go out of style Sony could release a Playstation Tablet. The PST would come packed in with a Dualshock 6 and a mount for your tablet!
