won't be long before it beats the PS3 which is at about 7.8m

how long do you guys think it will take?

Around next holiday season.

Well, it had the DS reputation, a massive price cut and a rushed Mario Kart 7 to support it before its first holiday.

People keep getting impressed but I just can't get around to be that. And who knows what other games they rushed? They excluded online on Star Fox so maybe that's another case?

Congratulations nonetheless...

And just imagine when Mario 2D, Pokemon, AC and MH4 release. Four 3 mil+ sellers in Japan...

Interesting chart, it cuts off for the DS just as its second holiday season kicks in. Week 58~ DS is at 5.73m

It's going to be tough going against the DS from then onward.

why do people say MK7 was rushed? They called in retro to complete the game faster not rush the game as in not make a complete game but then again you might not mean it that way?

Indeed, did DS even have a revision/price cut in its first 58 weeks? I have no idea.

Well, I meant that partly. Retro was hired to finish the Retro maps (lol) which, as you clearly can see, looks far worse graphically than the new maps.

Who knows, the lack of Waluigi and the awful Wuhu Island shortcut may be some other results of this.

Oh that DS graph has been cut off just at the best possible moment

Sales have been decent so far but its sales pace is really underwhelming compared to what the DS did in 2006. I remember the sales going up and down like crazy because they couldn't keep up with demand. It was really common back in 2006 to see sales of 200k units whenever Nintendo shipped enough. And 300k wasn't out of the question either when a big game was released. And nowadays people get excited over 90k units when a big game releases, haha.

Nintendo needs to bring back its "Training" games. Brain Training 1+2 sold what? Almost 50m units I think. And then there was English Training, Face Training, etc. and all of them sold millions of units. They also need a 3DS Lite this year with more mass market appeal. And they need to bring out some new mass market IP's like Brain Training and Wii Sports. You can't grow just by releasing new versions of your existing games.

Early DS / Wii era Nintendo was a company I gladly supported. They kept talking about how to include older people, mothers, families, casual gamers. There were stories about the Wii being given to patients in hospitals and retirement homes. Man, those were the times. I really felt special for supporting this company all along. And today Nintendo flat out refuses to include all the people that made their platforms sell so well. It's a shame, really. And Nintendo won't get out of its financial trouble with their handheld business going from 30m / year to 20m while losing money on the hardware.

It was a marathon and not a sprint. Started slowly and overtook everything. Good for them.

Did you bet on the turtle or the rabbit (like everyone else)?

Time and again, when people were saying doom, I said just wait until Christmas.  I think it would have been a great success, even at $250 if they had stuck to their guns.  The upcoming library and the unique features were just too much to resist.  At $170, it was an even bigger success.  I don't think it will match the DS, though.  The world has changed.  Many people that bought a DS for Brain Age or Nintendogs can find a similar fix elsewhere.  The DS isn't the sexy option it once was.  Still glad it proved all the naysayers wrong.
