Forums - Sales Discussion - When will Halo outsell the Gran Turismo Franchise?

The purpose of this thread is to predict when Halo will outsell the Gran Turismo franchise.

Mario is undoubtedly #1 in video game history. Mario is on a whole different stratosphere with incredible sales so it will not be discussed here.

The focus of this thread is on HD console exclusives and their respective #1 best sellers. Halo is undisputedly the #1 best selling EXCLUSIVE franchise on HD consoles. The Gears of War franchise has second most sales this generation. While Sony's Gran Turismo is third. Overall, however, Halo still has some catching up to do with Gran Turismo in TOTAL LIFETIME SALES. Gran Turismo sales this generation, while respectable, are at the low end of the series. These stagnating sales and negative growth for the franchise (mainly in Japan) suggest Halo can outsell GT more quickly than I originally thought possible.

Aproximately 65 million gran turismo games have been sold since its inception December 23, 1997

Approximately 45 million Halo games have been sold since its inception November 15, 2001

At this point it is a forgone conclusion that Halo will eventually outsell Gran Turismo. With the increased popularity of shooters these days perhaps it is a bit unsurprising that Halo is a bigger franchise than GT. PD's problem is that GT games take so long to develop and release. This generation the Halo franchise has outsold GT by 15 million. Only 2 GT games have released versus  5 Halo games.

With Microsoft wanting make Halo a yearly release the sales gap bettween the two bloackbuster franchises should evaporate quickly. Consider this from a previous thread: "If the high end figure becomes a reality, Microsoft will have sold around 50 million Halo games this generation. That's growth of over 230%. Halo is well on its way to becoming a 100 million selling franchise; up there with Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto and Pokemon. The Halo franchise is going from strength to strength and doesn't show any signs of slowing down."

My thoughts: I personally think Halo will knock off GT in total lifetime sales a year after Halo 5 hits shelves. I also predict GT6 will be a launch title for the PS4 but it will do less than 9 million lifetime. What do you think??

amazing halo can almost close gap given fact gran turismo had massive headstart

Hmm, Halo 4 should add at least 8m, with the current Halo's offsetting GT5 sales.

Probably the next Halo game to come out after the 1st main Halo of next gen.

It's impossible to predict GT6, GT7, Halo 5, Halo 6 sales etc.

With that said, I'm gonna use my crystal ball and predict if Halo & GT are even still around, and posting similar sales (which is unlikely).

@Zanewane, If and when it does happen, I wouldn't call it amazing, I certainly wouldn't be amazed. Given Halo's frequent releases and sales, it's only natural for it to eventually catch up if this trend continues. And if the trend does continue, then it's going to take about 5-10 years from now to catch up.

I've noticed that predicting anything over a few years away turns out to be horribly inaccurate, so predictions in here will likely be innacurate as well.

I agree that most predictions (especially from patcher) are wrong.

But this one seems easy.

Polyphony doesn't release as many games as Halo nor do their games sell as much.

Halo 4 is the start of a new trilogy and unless shooters suddenly become unpopular, I can't see how GT can keep the crown especially with the smaller playstation installed base

Yeah, 3-4 years tops....

I'll have to go with Kowen on this one...eventually is the only answer that I could give.

Reach will likely be a 10 Million seller. 11 (Or more?) if you count bundles not counted on VGChartz.
GT5, without major bundling, is probably gonna be sitting at ~9 Million. Major bundling will probably push it to 10.

These sales added bring Halo to ~47 and GT5 to ~67

Halo 4 is gonna release 2012, ~ 10 Million seller.

Halo Wars 2 Kinect will (should) release early 2013, ~2 Million

GT6 Prologue will release as a PS4 launch title, Holidays 2013, ~ 2 Million

GT6 is gonna release a Year later, Holidays 2014, ~9-10 Million seller

Halo 5 Nextbox is gonna release during the Holidays on 2014, ~10 Million seller

I'd also say there will be a GT Vita and a Halo launch game on the Nextbox, somewhere in all that. Maybe Halo 5 WILL be a launch game on the Nextbox on 2014. Either way, the gap should decrease fairly quickly over the next few series releases.

Predicting is fun.

If halo stops becoming a yearly release and polyphony launches their games quicker there is no guarantee it happens at all.

Time for hype

Gran Turismo 5 XL is releasing next year. I will be interested to see what happens with that title. On top of that GT5 getting the Greatest Hits release.
