Forums - PC Discussion - SWTOR is the Fastest Growing MMO Game in History

Launched on this past Tuesday, BioWare’s critically acclaimed MMO game, Star Wars: The Old Republic has already broken numerous records, shattering expectations and elevating the title to a new level. Since its release on December 20th, 2011, Star Wars: The Old Republic has already received over one million registered players with numbers expected to grow even more through the holidays.

Fan reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, with the first wave of players posting impressive play-time feats after having been granted Early Game Access and playing up to seven days before launch. To date, players have:

  • Logged 28 million in-game hours — roughly equivalent to watching all six Star Wars movies, two million times
  • Averaged well over five hours a day playing the game
  • Created more than 3.8 million characters; 510,000 Jedi Knights and 550,000 Sith Warriors
  • Killed more than two billion non-player characters in the eight days since Early Game Access began

“Already over a million players strong after our Dec 20th launch, The Old Republic has become the fastest growing subscription MMO in the history of our industry,” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, General Manager of EA’s BioWare Label and Co-Founder of BioWare. ”Everyone at BioWare, EA and LucasArts is honored – and humbled – by the stellar response from our fans. We’re going to work together closely with our community in the weeks, months and years ahead, continually serving our audience with regular delivery of compelling new features and content.”

The critic reviews have been following the optimistic trend with many offering high praise for dramatic, genre-changing innovations in the MMO category. BioWare’s mission to create a unique, innovative title, allowing for a much immersive experience has truly paid off. In the USA, G4 scored Star Wars: The Old Republic a perfect 5 out of 5 and PC Gamer rated the game a 93%. Australia’s AUSgames.com and Germany’s Games Aktuell scored the game 95%, and Sweden’s GameReactor gave The Old Republic a 90%.

The numbers and statistics provide insight into the sheer scope, time, and effort the geniuses at BioWare put into this groundbreaking game. Star Wars: The Old Republic represents an enormous milestone and successful team effort for BioWare and LucasArts. The inclusion of a deep-seeded story, high quality voice acting, and an overall commitment to quality has set Star Wars: The Old Republic apart from many of its genre predecessors.

Set thousands of years before the classic Star Wars movies, players will be immersed as they team up with friends online to fight in heroic battles reminiscent of the films, exploring a galaxy of vibrant planets and experiencing visceral Star Wars combat. Players join forces with either the Galactic Republic or Sith Empire and choose one of eight iconic Star Wars characters, including the Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular, Smuggler, Trooper, Sith Warrior, Sith Inquisitor, Bounty Hunter and Imperial Agent.

Included with the purchase of every copy of Star Wars: The Old Republic is 30 days of access to the game, after which players can continue to play through subscribing at:

  • $14.99 per month
  • $41.97 for 3 months
  • $77.94 for six months

Not so familiar with the game or series but is this is a remake of the original or a sequel?

I think it's set in the same timeframe - about 1500 years before the original SW movie -  as KOTOR but isn't tied in any way with it as far as story. -I could be wrong though - it's been years since I played KOTOR.

The game is a sequel to the original KOTOR series, set 300 years after the events in KOTOR 2 and 3000 years before the birth of Anakin Skywalker.

An awesome game this, I had been a little apprehensive after Dragon Age 2 but BIOWARE have more than delivered with this game and shown that Dragon Age 2 was nothing more than a mere blemish on their impressive track record. Makes me even more excited for MASS EFFECT 3!

Well, I have heard nothing but praise for the game, and despite my long time avoidance of WoW and other subscription based MMOs, I might just end up getting this... Partly for the Star Wars, partly because I love KOTOR, partly because I like other Bioware games, and partly because it just seems awesome. And my roommate is hellbent on talking me into getting it.

If you loved Bioware's other games you'll love this.

Well, great. It's basically been decided for me. A surprising amount of cash for Christmas (early cause I met family today, since people aren't available tomorrow) from people will cover the game and a six month subscription. The only problem is now I need to find the time...

How come no one has made an official SWTOR thread yet?

This is the only thing that can compete with Warcraft which is falling alot

because the star wars universe is so unique and beautiful and exciting.

until TITAN comes around
