Forums - Sony Discussion - Is Sony handheld gaming's last hope?

Anyone who thinks that smartphones will destroy the hand held market is a pure idiot. Sorry, I won't add too much to this thread considering I am sick and tired of this bullshit debate. How about we actually wait a year or at least a holiday season before jumping on the doomed bandwagon. I swear most people are sheep.

Most of the people that believe that believe that handhelds are only useful for offers quick shallow experiences while on the go. While this may be a great bonus for them, it's not their primary function IMO.

I guess PS3 + PSVita integration is the last hope... I'll buy a Vita for sure because that... play my games at home in my PS3 and outside in my Vita using the same save is great.

I think part of the problem is that parents lend their smartphone for just a few hours/minutes to keep their kids busy. No need for a 3ds with a 3d horses, just download angry birds. Nintendo tapped in a blue ocean, but it's becoming red now. There is nothing they can do to stop this.

There will always be a market created by the core gamer. Sony will be in a better position, since the casuals are shifting away from handhelds. I don't believe Vita will significantly outdo PSP. Sony will leverage PS3 development, while Nintendo will leverage cheaper development. Just a wild guess handheld market will drop 30% compared to PSP/DS era. 3DS and Vita will go head to head and split the market equally in half.

4.3" screens are good enough. It's just a matter of when a popular (ergonomic) bluetooth controller releases for mobile phones (extra battery built-in?). Ice Cream Sandwich will have this kinda support. It's also a no brainer games will get better and better on mobile phones. Ultimately third partys don't really care about true handhelds. Apple, Google and even Microsoft are in a better position long term.

So no Sony get fight this trend.

I agree but unfortunetly these share holders could very well destroy the handheld market. If share holders loose complete faith in handheld gaming and pressure their companies to abandon it. The industry could very well implode at the hands of idiotic share holders rather then directly from smart phones.

Look at the steady drop in Nintendo's shares with 3DS? Or Capcom's drop of over 8% when they announced MH4 for 3DS or Square's shares falling. Investors in all of Nintendo's supporters and in Nintendo themselves are trying to push Nintendo out of the handheld industry. Investors trying really hard to get Nintendo to go and develop for iOS and Android.

If Sony's investors do the same thing Nintendo's investors are and all of Sony's third parties have investors that act similar to Capcom. We could see the handheld industry shot to shit.

So directly no smart phones can't kill of handhelds. However indirectly with the help of moronic investors they could actually see that goal achieved.

I still think the 3DS will sell more than PSV, though I'm definitely more interested in PSV.

THIS.

Sony should have integrated a phone into the Vita. Since there is a 3g model, they could have added support for it to function as a mobile phone = win win win and a sure buy for me.

No! Not the last hope because Handheld gaming is not in trouble. Did you see what the announce the other night. It was garbage, but it will still sell because of fanbases, and fanboys.
