I remeber back when Melee was like 3 years old and I played it to death. I wonder if the charectars in the game had a game as good as melee.(At that time I was really into Mario and Pokemon) I bought star fox assult due to this. I also bought wind waker aswell and I wanted F zero GX but I never found it.  I borrowed metroid fusion. etc I could go on. All I'm saying is that if it weren't for smash bros I would probably not try those games. Anyone here have to same thoughts?

Will "The Avengers" make people go back and see Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Hulk's movies? Probably a few but for the most part, the earlier franchises are what will make people want to check out The Avengers movie. Even the philosophy about how The Avengers came about in comics was this: Getting all of the characters in one place seemed like an amazing deal for the customer. Instead of buying Thor, Cap, and Iron Man's comics, they only had to buy one comic to see all of their favorites.

So, I'm voting for "no". Not on any noticeable scale, anyway. Otherwise, Metroid, Fire Emblem, and a host of others would have had huge followings. It adds to the notoriety of the characters but it doesn't really compel me (and I guess, a lot of people) to go out and try the games. I still have no desire to play Pokemon or Earthbound. And even the game used as an example, Starfox, hasn't had incredible sales in a long time.

Put it this way:

First get Legend of Zelda: "Oh, that's that cool green-cap guy from Smash Brothers. This will be a good game."

I was wrong. It was a phenomenal game.

It worked for me. I know the only reason i tried Metroid, F-Zero, Starfox, Ice Climber, and Fire Emblem was because of Smash Bros

I'm one of the few chaps that got interested in other Nintendo's franchises due to aquired the N64 version... :)

no cause if it did we'd see more of the others instead of the 4 man franchises.
