Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Question about Wii widescreen settings.

I recently was given a new HDTV television and have been playing with the screen settings to get the best visuals. I have found the right settings for the Wii games but I have been unable to find good settings for the Gamecube and Virtual Console games.  Any suggestions on what combinations of settings for my television and my Wii to maximize the quality of the picture?

I wouldn't expect much either way.

Dragonball Z pwns all.

You'll want to set your TV to 4:3 mode when playing gamecube and virtual console games. There are a few gamecube games that may support widescreen, I believe, but they're in the minority.

Also, it's worth getting component cables, and it's definitely worth connecting the Wii audio cables directly to your audio receiver (rather than through your TV) to interpret the sound as Pro Logic II, which has surprisingly good surround support.

Thanks TheBigfatLJ! You really helped me out.

It's J not LJ

Dragonball Z pwns all.

Gamecube games usually have settings in the game to go to 16:9 mode, and also to enable Pro Logic II surround sound. Wii games typically omit these settings, because the Wii firmware allows you to set them globally (but Gamecube games played on your Wii can't detect these settings).

A lot of Nintendo GameCube First-party and exclusive Third-party games support Dolby Pro Logic II and 480p 16:9 widescreen so no worries.

Most support PL-II, but a lot of first party and third party exclusives don't support widescreen. For example, I routinely play Mario Kart: DD for the cube on my Wii and it doesn't support widescreen. RE4 is another game that doesn't support widescreen (although you could buy it for the Wii -- that version does).

ugg1020: if you haven't picked up component cables yet, order them from monoprice.com. You'll get them for something like $7 shipped and they will increase the image quality of all games.  Check out the comparison screens here:

You can see how much sharper the component cables make it.  It would be even more obvious in higher end Wii games like Metroid and SMG.
