Forums - Sales Discussion - American Softare is Up

http://www.vgchartz.com/aweekly.php

I didn't see a thread started (other than ioi's teaser) so I thought I'd start one.

Things to take note of in the sales:

No PS3 titles in the top 20, 4 in the top 50.

PSP only had two titles in the top 50 despite selling 280,000 units, wtf?

PS2 had 5 titles in the top 50 (1 in the top 20)

Wii had 12 titles in the top 50 (6 in the top 20)

360 had 14 titles in the top 50 (7 in the top 20)

DS had 12 titles in the top 50 (5 in the top 20)

Guirtar Hero III is still selling like hotcakes.

My End of 2008 Hardware Predictions (console only):

360: 28 million

PS3: 24 million

Whoops...title should read "Software" (if you couldn't figure that out).

Wii sells most software for the first time in a while in America, despite having a lower install base, and even accounting for Wii Sports (and Forza/Marvel:UA).

Now that we have a complete picture of the worldwide weekly sales, the Wii sold over 2 million more software units than the 360 and more than 3 million more software units than the PS3 (Again, even accounting for Wii Sports/UA/Forza).

Even if Ioi has made some serious errors, and even if those errors universally favor the Wii, it looks very likely that the Wii outsold the PS3/360 in terms of software by a considerable margin in the busiest week of the year. If you look at earlier weeks in the year:

You'll see that this week is equivalent to about 2 months worth of software sales from the earlier months of the year. It's extremely critical to sell software at this time of year, and the Wii is doing in spades. I think it's time to put the "Wii doesn't sell software" debate to rest.

No PS3 software sold more than 100K in NA. The only game that came close was bundled. The highest legit game sales was like 58K. That is pretty bad.

I think the PSP's software story is sadder. It's Christmas, for crying out loud.

The PS3 has almost exactly 1/3 the hardware sales in the US as the 360. (3.3M vs 10M) And it sold almost exactly 1/3 the software last week. Shocking, i tell you. Shocking!

Indeed, but unfortunately everyone seems to think that logic need not apply for the discussion of sales.

As in go buy us some coffee.

I made a post about this a couple weeks ago, but basically all three systems are selling software at ABOUT the same rate as you'd expect them to, worlwide. The 360 has typically been leading American software (as it should), the Wii's been leading worldwide software (as it should), the PS3 has been selling software at about 1/3 the rate of the 360 in America, and a bit over 1/2 the rate worldwide (as it should and, yet again, as it should).

It varies from week to week, but in essence, no system has been selling way more than its share of software on a consistent basis (with a few oddball weeks when a particularly strong piece of software is released, or this week, when Wii had a particuarly large hardware push). The primary dictator of software sales is hardware install base, and it shows.

Yeah , the sales of the PSP are weird ... taking in account the software sales in the top 200 and this weeks hardware sales , gthe attach ratio is only 2:1 :(

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

i don't know..i honestly expected sw sales (for wii/x360/ps3: i mean for EACH platform) to be higher than this...it's christmas week and apart from bundled games sw sales went up only 20%? no christmas gifts this year? :)

2008 year end sales (made in January 2008):
