Forums - Sony - Does Sony Own Blu-Ray?

With all this talk about Nintendo going to have Blu-Ray in there next console do they even have the rights to use it?

Will Sony just let there compitition just use it? Or will they have to pay some big bucks or pay with a % of profits?

DO Sony even OWN Blu-ray? do they even have the rights to decide whos allowed to use blu-ray and who cant?

Now i know there are alot of big names behind Blu-Ray like Panasonic Pioneer ect ect but apparently Sony is its biggest supporter and owns most of its shares but the question still is Who really owns Blu-Ray?!?!?

While were on the subject of disc formats what do yous think the next Xbox will use? Blu-ray? DVDs? HD-DVDS? or somthing new?

Sony doesn't OWN all of blu-ray but rather a share of it. I think Panasonic owns the largest portion of it.

The companies that hold the specific patents

CyberLink Corporation
Dell Inc.
Hewlett-Packard Company
Hitachi Ltd.
Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.
LG Electronics Inc.
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (Panasonic)
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation
Pioneer Corporation
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd.
Sharp Corporation
Sony Corporation
TDK Corporation
Victor Company of Japan, Ltd.
Warner Home Video Inc.

And yes, Wagram is correct. Panasonic owns the most patents for it

Sig thanks to Saber! :D

The blu-ray disk association, of which many companies are part. Sony is one of them.

Also it should be known while Panasonic owns the most they are almost exclusively for the players, where Sony owns the majority of the patents related to the discs.

As others have said, Sony have far from a majority share - all the other members would vote to sell BD's to Nintendo

Regardless, assuming Sony owned it >50% - if Sony were to use their power in one market in order to gain an unfair advantage in a compeltely seperate market, that would come under anticompetitive behaviour, they would be sued for a LOT of money. Just as google can't tinker with it's google search algorithm to preference pro-Android websites. The alternative is they just license it out and make a tit ton of cash.

Regardless, it's ridiculous. Nintendo have developed a proprietry storage format for every single one of their handhelds and home consoles. They will not break this pattern.

Edit: Fixed Typo

They would probably just pay a hefty price for it, and i am sure they can afford it lol

Very interesting.

So if Nintendo did want to use a blu-ray drive into their next console, but use their own disc medium (The GameCube), they could maybe bypass Sony altogether and just pay the companies who just have patents to the drive itself.
