Forums - Microsoft Discussion - GamesRadar: Kinect - The day-one verdict

Interesting.  The main feeling I got was they liked it but wanted to like it more than the experience had turned out to be, and they were going through the usual thought process of trying to interpret what had prevented them reaching the level of fun their expectation had set for them.

So not negative I'd say, but not glowing positive either.  Middling I suppose.

I've always felt the real test of Kinect - assuming MS doesn't change it's stance - will be prolonged use and exposure to an experience where while you move yourself, you never get any direct physical feedback outside of your own movement.  I've always worried about this element becoming an issue and I think elements of it are reflected in their comments even after just one day.  You move, and the game mostly moves with you, but sometimes it doesn't, and without any physical feedback the experience abruptly becomes very disconnected (sorry for pun).

Still, launch titles are just that, launch titles.  Neither Move nor Kinect seem set to launch with anything truly stellar or ground breaking, so I guess after the initial sales spikes and holiday purchases the first 6 months of 2011 will be the real test for the devices, and whether they have staying power in the market or quickly fade away.

Still keen to try it myself, and Kinect remains the aspect of 360 most likely to tip the scales for me for a purchase.

I'll continue to watch as more and more detailed - and non MS controlled - feedback on the device continues to appear.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Kinect threads are ever so popular but somehow this one isnt.

About what I have expected from the beginning.  A LOT of hot air and smoke and mirrors and issues with consistent, reliable performance.   Very Eye-Toy like one of the reviewers stated.  Some good games there that seemed like they would be more fun with a real controller.  Many interface problems, issues, etc.

We'll have to see if more reviews corroborate this one but thus far it looks like what it has seemed to be from the start to me. A bust.

There is nothing in this video that says anything about hot air or smoke and mirrors. They complained about interface issues, not that it doesn't work properly. And if you want to say this means it is a bust then move is as well, because both have shitty launch lineups.

Its launch games. No surprises here. We've seen what Move has to offer at launch. We saw what this gen had at launch for the consoles. Launches are always lackluster and what comes out in the next 6-12 months will make or break Kinect.

This.

They complained more than about interface issues.  They also complained about the games doing 'a little extra' than what you want.  You punch and your punch is recognized and so is something extra. They didn't say smoke and mirrors / hot air on this you're right but they essentially said that their performance was spotty and very Eye Toy like.

They said some of the software even felt like good software (With a controller).  This video just furthered my view point that Kinect's function will really be limited to dance titles / exercise titles.

The Move had a pretty horrible launch lineup sans Move Champions but in most cases reviewers couldn't stop raving about the precision, accuracy, and potential about the Move.   I don't see similar praises being thrown around with Kinect and at this early juncture that should scare you.

Well seeing as some core games have already been announced for Kinect that were not dance or exercise titles you would be mistaken. We will see if hey work well or not but there are ways that Kinects functionality can be great if used correctly and just because you don't have the imagination of how it can work with different types of games doesn't mean it can't.

I'm not saying game types outside the exercise / dance genre won't be attempted or tried on the Kinect.  I just believe you won't be seeing many or any AAA titles on the Kinect ouside of those two genres (Is a better way to put it).  Maybe a standard Sports title.

It's not about imagination from my perspective.  There is a lot of technical limitations to what they're doing.  With new freedom, comes new restrictions.

Regardless, I'm not going to keep going back and forth on this.  I'll magically end up b& or some other awesome thing like that. ;)  I just believe that video review bolstered my pre-formed beliefs even more.

Exactly what I expected for a technology with no controller. They are even comparing it to the Eyetoy and even saying that Eyetoy has a better user interface than Kinnect. Anyhow, I also agree with reviewers that such games are not for them but more for kids.

Locking, as this breaks the embargo.
