Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Fans, who do you want see OUT of the console race?

I want Microsoft out of consoles and back in the PC market, the Console competition can be between Nintendo, Sony and either Sega or a new competitor (not Apple)...

People need to stop blaming Sony for the Sega hardware demise, the awesome Dreamcast failed in sales because of the CD/32X/Saturn debacle, even EA didn't want to do business with them after pulling the plug on the Saturn (At least Sega took this one to their benefit and made 2K sports, now owned by Take-Two), they had it all with the Megadrive/Genesis, they were beating Ninty in the Americas, they needed to do simply more great games like they were doing, instead they went crazy... when they did the Dreamcast it was already too late, people got sick of Sega and moved to Sony and Nintendo...

The same thing can be said about Sony now, i don't like MS in console gaming but i cannot blame them for Sony's sales in the US (or Japan or EU but Sony is doing better there), that was all Sony putting the $600 tag on the PS3, having no games whatsoever during almost one year after launch and having production issues a lot of times... MS maybe bought 3rd party titles but most of the devs went multi because of PS3's low sales...

MS and not because of their hardware. I personally feel that MS has been damaging the gaming community for console and PC for years now. Often they have purchased companies to make them inhouse of sorts. They force the companies to produce top quality games(yes that's good), but often at the expense of crippling or closing down developers other divisions. Other times MS has made a company make a game that they shouldn't have only to close down the developer late. While I can't name all the companies MS has harmed I know a few personal ones that I cared about until MS destroyed them or their IP.

Fasa, great PnP game company. MS bought the Fasa Electronics for the Battle Tech license. MS was hiring Fasa staff away for Fasa Electronics division. The owners saw what was happening and sold the PnP IP to other companies and family. However MS held onto the Software license and has produced crappy games except for BT since then. Seriously Shadow Run was RAPED compared to what it could have been. Crimson Skies 2 was ok.

Bungie, awesome developer before hand. Made games like Myth a fantastic RTS style game and a few others. They had Halo that was going to be a more open Shooter and looked interesting in the original design. They also developing Oni at the time. MS bought them up. Oni was put to another division. Halo 1 became a CRAP Sci-Fi zombie shooter an mostly made it's reputation on console. Bungie now ONLY makes Halo games.

Ensemble. Do I really need to say more. Fantastic RTS company that made comparitive RTS games to Blizzard in their own style. They were forced to make Halo RTS for the console and the company was forced to shut down... yay MS?

MS Flight Simulator? what happened to that company. gone.

There are also a variety of companies that they close down or pull investment out of.

Another theme. MS makes PC game developers make console games and shuts them down if they aren't million sellers.  Why make PC developers to console developers. It's a handicap unless you give the resources and talent. Bungie is the only company that made it and even then part of them was destroyed. Their talent is just a pale shadow.

Yeah, MS can go kiss it. Because they are more harm than good.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Actually now that i've thought about it, the logical answers from all three camps should be thus;

Nintendo fans should want Microsoft out, because Microsoft's the bigger threat, simply because Nintendo absolutely cannot compete with Microsoft on their terms, given that Microsoft is best at what Nintendo's worst at (Appeal to the Fratcore, Online gaming, and Western Third Party support). If the conditions of the industry ever tilted in Microsoft's favor, it would be ruinous for Nintendo.

Microsoft fans, however, should want Sony out, as the PlayStation brand crowds out Microsoft's business rather directly

Sony fans should want Nintendo out, because Nintendo themselves seem to only focus on Sony as a rival, which you can see with the 3DS. Nintendo and Sony also seem to compete most directly for 3rd party exclusives: Monster Hunter Tri and Dragon Quest X are both great examples here, as is the looming threat of Kingdom Hearts Thwii

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Copycats

The companies who dont care about fun just money

I'll never get over the loss of the greatest rival that Nintendo ever had :)

The only rival to Nintendo is Nintendo themselves.

what about Sony ? PS1 and PS2 days?

They are so different in style from Nitnendo and Sega that they shouldn't be considered a rival.

how so ? they're japanese ?

It's hard to explain. But I'll try.

Sega was like Nintendo in that they are both pure games companies, both relied on first party games to compete and to drive hardware install bases, both have a mascot that are the face of the company, and they have similar licensing practices.

Sony does not have a platformer that is the face of the company They have platformers, sure, but no mascots, and none of their characters is the face of the company the way Sonic or Mario is. They rely on undercutting hardware and paying third parties for exclusives in order to compete and drive install base.

I just think that Sony is too different from Nintendo to be considered a rival. Sure, they are a competitor, but they compete on very different terms whereas Nintendo and Sega competed against each other identically, and thus were rivals.

I totally disagree with you.

Sony did have a mascot during the PS1 dominated era.
And i really hope your joking about Sony relying on  3rd party games, Sony has probably the best First Party line up of any of the competitors this generation. Sony also relies on making new IPs instead of continuously recycling old ones.

Crash bandicoot and spyro? Those were good platformers for the system, but they were never the face of Sony.

How much hardware do Sony's first party games push? Have you seen how terrible Sony's first party lineups were during the PS1 and 2 era?

And even though Sony's first party games are new IP's they are not original. GoW plays just like DMC, GT is a racer, Ratchet and Clank is your standard 3D platform game, same goes for spyro in his glory days, Killzone is a generic FPS and Infamous is a generic sanbox game. Nothing about hose games stand out. The only Sony first party games that stand out are LBP (Which is from Media Molecule who were bought by Sony this gen) and the games from Team ICO.

Sony never relyed on first party until most recently, and they only try to do that becasue their 3rd party support decreased this gen. Hell, the game that sold the original Playstation was Final Fantasy VII wich is a 3rd party game.

Crash was definitely the face of the playstation and moved untold amounts of hardware. They were't far behind mario 64 in sales.

Ask me about being an elitist jerk

Time for hype

Firstly - you non-Nintendo fans, get out of our topic! :O You know who you are >:(

Secondly, I'm not too keen on either of the remaining "big two", but I feel that Microsoft is mostly against what I believe in when it comes to how videogames should be developed. Also, I'm not old  enough to have been part of the Sega/Nintendo war, and I want to see them back in the game too :)

Killzone is a generic FPS

Can you name me one game that released before Killzone which has the same gritty atmosphere?

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

Can you name me one game that released before Killzone which has the same gritty atmosphere?

can you name me one gamer that plays games just for atmosphere?
