Forums - General Discussion - Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada discusses console war

SE is cozying up to the 360 now, interesting.

Thanks to kenobi after I got him to ban my old account (dallas) after someone hacked into it and being ok with me coming back under a slightly different username.  I appreciate our communication in the PMs.  Also I want to give a big thank you to vgchartz for being one of the cooler websites around.

Oh, and I'm still the next Michael Pachter

Ooops. Based on my understanding, the context of "attachment" rate from Square Enix (and other 3rd Party Publishers) is based on 3rd Party attachment rate.

For 3rd Party Publishers, the attachment rate of 1st Party Games is not too relevant.

You have to note where he is coming from. If most of the Wii Software Sales, especially the highest selling ones are published by Nintendo, then as a 3rd Party Publisher, it does not look as good to them. Business wise, you have to take this into account.

Basically, in VG Charts Data:

Out of the 11 Million Sellers for Wii, only 3 Titles are 3rd Party
Out of the 29 Million Sellers for 360, 23 are 3rd Party
Out of the 2 Million Sellers for PS3, none are 3rd Party

So that might make his comments more reasonable for Square Enix as a company. 23 out 29 is a much higher pecentage compared to the other consoles.

If you take that into context, then of course for a 3rd Party Publisher, they have to look at which console supports 3rd Parties the most.

In the case of Million Sellers (from VG Charts Data only), then the 360 is the most successful for 3rd Party Publishers.

Anyone feel like doing a comparison of the attach rates of last gen consoles? I'm guessing it would end up looking something like:

1. Dreamcast (by a lot)
2. Xbox
3. Gamecube
4. PS2

This is true, but it's also the system with the most high quality 3rd party games.  In this case, it's as simple as crappy games get crappy sales.  Also, that doesn't necessarily paint an accurate picture, as overall 3rd party sales are more like 2 to 1 for the 360 when comparing this year for the 360 to this year for the Wii (as we discovered in another topic earlier this week).  Obviously million sellers are important, but there are other software sales, and it's also important to take production costs into account.

Are you try to take a shot at Mass Effect sales and claiming its a crappy game?

lol no not at all.  Mass Effect sales haven't been bad, just not stellar.  I'm sure it will still break 1 million anyway.

@naznatips

That is true.  But from my understanding, Square Enix is a high budget high sales type of company.

So therefore, I compared the "Million Sellers" list - as this is the most likely goal for their games.  Again, in this thread's original context - Square Enix is/and should be concerned mostly/only for their own company's well-being.

A question to ask is:  What is your list/definition of high quality games? Contrast that with the "budget" or "cost" of these games?

From my limited game universe knowledge, I think when you mean "high quality" games, these are most likely the high budget games (hence XBox).  That is a high budget game is more likely to deliver a high quality game.  Of course there are exceptions, but maybe as a rule it applies.

Conversely, you can list off some high quality games - that had a small or low budget to show some posters/readers some examples.

I think he should release some high quality hardcore titles on the Wii, and then say how gamers aren't taking it seriously.

So far the kinds of games that did well last gen, and are doing well on the other consoles, are selling very well on the Wii. The 360 has a notably better attach rate, but most of that comes from being on the market a year longer, and not have a game bundled along. The lower cost of development should be enough to negate the slightly lower sales, and even that problem is going to disappear when the userbase gets big enough.

Ditto x 2!
