Forums - Sales Discussion - Nintendo, Sony, Capcom Quarterly Data (Apr-Jun 2010) out Tonight

PS3 will be ahead of x360 this year, atleast in shipped numbers, that for sure.
I mean GT5 release, many people wait to get PS3 just for this game alone.

Anyway, from my old post:

NeoMatrix said:

The end of September ship totals were 33.5m for x360. VGC sales for Oct 03 - 32,675,414.
The end of December ship totals for PS3 were 33.5m. VGC sales for Jan 02 - 31,078,061.
And there were some shortages for 120gb PS3 model in NA during January.

The end of March ship totals were 40.2m for x360. VGC sales for March 27 - 39,080,401.
The end of March ship totals for PS3 were 35.7m. VGC sales for March 27 - 33,770,771.
And there still were some PS3 shortages in NA.

2m difference in PS3 sales between shipped numbers and VGC numbers for almost a year. There is something wrong with VGC PS3 data.

Sony keeps a lot of units in the pipe, and VGChartz posts units sold, not shipped. Otherwise holiday sales would all spike months earlier than make any sense.

Sony posting profits, Nintendo posting losses, DS falling like a rock, the X360 first place for some weeks now, the world is upside down.

By the way, Nintendo shipped 1.1m NSMBWii copies this quarter and VGC have it at 1.82m for the same period. Quite overtracked, it seems.

Uh Sony posted a loss still... the gaming section is apparently pulling its weight but it's all added together under one devision so it's impossible to separate unless Sony outright says it.

Im pretty sure he's talking about as a WHOLE, Sony did post a profit of 289m and narrowed their gaming division loss massively, their Network division even posted less loss than MS EDD.

This is only the second time in company history to have a quarterly loss and both were for the exact same reason.

When did it happen last time? And what are the reasons you're talking about? Just curious. Thanks.

One of the quarters in 2004 or 2005.  Forget the exact ones but I'll research the details later.

The reason is the same here, a one time foreign exchange charge.  Nintendo technically had a $500 million profit but elected to take a $794 million foreign exchange charge which reduced those profits to a reported loss of $288 million.

Wow the crazy currency fluctuations are hitting hard, I wonder if the 3DS R&D is in there as well, seems like that bad boy would take a good chunk of change to develop

Actually, I bet the R&D was quite inexpensive comapred to what would be expected for a new portable console.  Sharp did all the R&D and the manufacturing for the 3D Parallax Barrier screen.   And much of the other functions are simply enhanced DS functions.  The online features look to be the most costly in terms of R&D expensises.

True, I mean they seem to be making a whole new online network for the 3DS, downloading movies and everything. always being online, which likely means a lot more functions like friends able to see if you're online and such.  I guess they could have evaded a lot of R&D with making deals with these companies for their tech, I mean they have the promise of having Nintendo use them exclusively for however many years the 3DS is on market, then Sharp gets to essentially promote their glasses free 3D tech that could become viable for the home in a few years, so you're probably right.

Sony has said in the past that "shipped" starts when the order is taken.  So orders placed by retailers and distributors count as soon as they are made.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Sony's losses are due to all the electronics being tied in together, still... the company is hurting and the restructuring hasn't helped much rather just slowed the bleeding.

Any 3DS produced and all materials aquired would be listed as assets in the balance sheet. They are trading one asset which is cash for another asset in terms of physical product so therefore you wouldn't see it.

Capcom figures for the quarter, from their platinum titles list...

  • Lost Planet 2 (360, PS3) 1,500,000
  • Super Street Fighter IV (360, PS3) 1,300,000
  • Monster Hunter Tri (Wii) 700,000 (1,800,000 ltd)
  • Resident Evil 5 (360, PS3) 100,000 (5,400,000 ltd)
  • Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP) 100,000 (3,100,000 ltd)
...Tri officially becomes Capcom's best selling console exclusive this gen, beating out Dead Rising (1.6m), Lost Planet 360 (timed exclusive, 1.5m) and RE4 Wii Edition (1.7m).

WOW PS3 numbers.

No one posted Nintendo figures yet?

  • Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) 4,090,000
  • Wii Sports Resort (Wii) 3,020,000 (19,160,000 ltd)
  • Wii Sports (Wii) 2,730,000 (66,190,000 ltd)
  • Wii Fit Plus (Wii) 1,870,000 (14,520,000 ltd)
  • Pokemon Heart Gold / Soul Silver (DS) 1,690,000 (10,090,000 ltd)
  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii) 1,100,000 (15,810,000 ltd)

  • Wii (HW): 3,040,000 (73,970,000 ltd)
  • Wii (SW): 28,170,000 (573,000,000 ltd)

...no real new info in the schedule, except there's evidently going to be a DS version of Rock Band 3 (?).
