The real question with DA:O's looks is that Mass Effect looks so much better, yet Dragon Age is the more sucessful game according to Bioware

I thought the answer simple, DA is just a much better game than ME. I don't see how looks have anything to do with how the game plays.

What I mean is that it is not like its their second franchise, so they don't invest as much in the graphics, it is their main franchise but it looks less polished than Mass Effect

That's because Bioware used an inhouse engine for that game whereas ME used a 3rd party engine hence allowing them to focus more on polishing the looks instead of building everything from the ground up. I suspect DA2 would look quiet a lot better, I suspect anyways.....

I downloaded the CGI trailers.  I looked at video comparisons on youtube (you wouldn't believe the fuss made about which version looked better--PC/360/PS3).  I read the reviews.

I bought Dragon Age origins for the 360 yesterday.  You would not believe the look of disgust that was on my face when I saw this game running on my HDTV!  Holy shit, is this game ugly!!  I'm sure it's a great game and I intend to really get into it today but, at this point, I think any version of this game is going to look like ass.

Naw, it had to be severely dumbed down graphically to fit on a single DVD for 360 - The PC version is almost 20 GB big IIRC, where as a single DVD9 gives just over a third that capacity...

and yet the PC version still looks pathetic.

I thought it looked pretty good, not one of the best but certainly not pathetic.

Doesn't look better than a Source or UE3 game to me. For a game that came out not even a year ago, from a developer with a rather big budget, it's certainly disappointing.

Especially the horrible textures and bad looking characters.

Considering they built the engine solely for this game

It's based more on raw power than effects so I'm not surprised lawl.

A lot of ME2's textures looked absolutely awful- it was the overall design that helped most there. Still, there are plenty of mods to replace stuff in Dragon Age.

And yeah, Dragon Age is head and shoulders above ME2 as an RPG. I'm not even sure if ME2 counts as an RPG in the traditional sense. They fixed the combat, but dumped far too much else. The game as a whole seems to depend far more on your shooting skill in utterly ridiculously artifical environments than on building up your characters. Entertaining- sure. Satisfying- no, it's fucking dumb as ass.

So much Mass Effect hate in this thread!  I thought it was a great game.

They couldn't fix Garrus' armor worth a damn. You know, if your characters are going to be shown close up almost all the time from the chest up, at LEAST don't make them have shit for texture quality. It was the PC version we're talking about here too, absolutely pathetic.

That pic also looks much better than the PS3 version...

The CGI trailers are just amazing, if only the game looked that good (Bioware are SOOOO good at making these trailers, especially the TOR team)

Sadly that is all that game has going for it atm. Gameplay looks like utter trash so far. Really don't like how this games popularity is stemming from the fact that it is Star Wars, those CGI trailers, and the fact that you get a ship....NUUUU WHEY!

Keep in mind that Star Wars is my favorite film series.

I don't hate the game at all, like I said I found it very entertaining. I enjoyed the combat, but it didn't really make much difference how you developed your character and was much more dependent on your own skill than the character's abilities. Dragon Age was much more interesting in that regard and there wasn't all the rather silly, artificially placed cover to hide behind.  The story and history behind each of the games was very well done though.

It was bizarre, especially considering the beautiful overall look of the game. Also, Shepard never took his helmet off- my (male) character actually embraced, then kissed Liara at one point while still wearing it. The PC UI was a bit odd as well: no mouse wheel support; no hot keys to go directly to your journal, the codex etc; the magic space bar. It was better in many respects than in the first game, but with a little more care, it could have been superb.

No need to hate on ME 2, on 360 it was one of my favourite games

One guy said it had a shit story, another guy (ie: you) said it was dumb as ass, and then some other guy started talking about Garrus's armor.  I just sensed an unjust amount of animosity from a game from the same developer!  You don't see Kirby fans hating on Super Mario Bros.!
