Forums - Sony Discussion - E3 2010: Portal 2 PS3 cross-compatible with PC

Portal 2 on the PS3 could well be cross-compatible with the PC version, if Valve gets it way.

Valve developer Erik Johnson has said that PS3 users playing co-op with PC users is "something the team is gunning for."

When asked about the cross-compatibility between Steam and Steamworks Johnson said, "The plan is you will be able to play between console and PC."

Not only is this exciting for Portal fans on both platforms but it has strong implications for other Valve games like The Orange Box and future titles, which could be given the same treatment.

As for the 360, Johnson said that there were no plans for Steamworks to come to the console at the moment and that the decision ultimately lay with Microsoft.

Besides, Gabe Newell said that Portal 2 will be a better game on the PS3 than on the 360 anyway.

We brought you a Portal 2 trailer on Wednesday.

Probably something to do with the fact that Valve are full of crap when it comes to console games.  Lets see how many free updates they do on this open platform when they're footing the bill for data transfers.  I personally would rather they actually supported their current L4D games rather than milking an IP for sales.

Uhhh, Valve has released over 120 free updates to Team Fortress 2 on PC, all of it came out of Valve's pockets.

Bandwidth is not as expensive as console manufacturers make it out to be, Sony/Microsoft just want to squeeze pennies from developers using bandwidth costs as an excuse.

Valve are masters of digital downloads, so if anyone can make data transfer costs negligible, it's Valve.

Besides, you're missing the biggest reason why Valve is releasing Portal on PS3: Steam! Vave is trying to entice PS3 owners to join Steam, which is the best DD service on earth.

Soon Steam will be present on 4 different platforms: PC, MAC, PS3 and LINUX. World domination is next.
