I consider myself extremely good at strategy games, I cannot fathom how people can manage to get through any of the games without losing anyone; that seems highly improbable. There's always going to be some sort of critical hit surprises. I suppose you could reset levels that you lose characters on, but that is where the game becomes a chore and not worth playing anymore. |
It's hard to do it without losing characters, and it certainly doesn't require save state cheating. Hard mode only allows saving outside of battle, and the most number of times I've played a level is 3. Normal mode I lost no-one but did use a bit of save state cheating when I made mistakes
Critical hit surprises are not as big as you are implying. If your characters are the same level of mine, then the crit that enemies have against you from non killer axes, spears and magic should be 0, so no need to worry
Bows and swords should be around 4-5 (or more for killer) % but a critical hit wont come anywhere near to killing your tanks
So the only things left to worry about are killer axes and killer lances. The best tactics against these are
1 - Soften them up with bows and magic, finish them with melee in 1 hit so they cant retaliate
2 - Kill them with or force them to attack a nimble swords(wo)man, someone like Zihark or Mia. Their high luck and speed will mean that the hit chance and crit chance should be very low
And general advice would be - Accept that you will not be able to level up everyone. Some characters should only be used for things like shove, trading items and completing objectives. My battle plan for most levels is to create a line of my hardest to kill warriors at a choke point. Then next turn you move your damage dealing and healing characters up to do their job and then reform your protective wall 2 or 3 squares ahead of them. On normal mode you can make it display where the enemies can move/attack, so use that to make sure your line is good enough. Try not to move some people like Meg and Fiona and if, when you've moved everyone else you notice that someone can be attacked, then use shove/rescue or just put them in the path of the enemy
