Forums - Gaming Discussion - Never Played a Deus Ex Game but Interested in Deus Ex: HR. What's it like?

Well you see I've never played a Deus Ex game before but after watching the first trailer of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, I'm very interested.

So can someone tell me what Deus Ex is all about and the type of gameplay? I know it's a FPS wit RPG elements but how does it all play out?

It’s a first person shooter with allot of RPG traits. To start with you can’t shoot that straight but as you gain exp you spend it on things like small weapons (then you can shoot straight), explosives, swimming and so on. Each area is open world (ish) so you can approach each objective as you wish. With biomods to gain through out the game, each of which giving you extra feats like strength, health regeneration and others your ability to approach each area as wish expands even more. Story wise it’s a spy thriller set in the future. There is a virus spreading through the population and not enough medicine to go around. It is my favourite game of all time. If you are running XP, pick up the goty for PC and have a go. The graphics, although dated aren’t that bad but the game play stands up to this day. I should know I still play it now and then.

assumption is the mother of all f**k ups

I'm talking about the original one and that game was just awesome.. Objectives could be completed in different ways, including stealth, sniping, heavy frontal assault, dialogue, or engineering and computer hacking.. But for example the use of brutal force had an impact with NPC.. they might like or hate that you would be that violent... conversations with NPC were important and could change the game.. so every action was important.. even letting a "boss" alive at the beginning of the game had an impact later on..

You would gain skillpoints to upgrade your skills, biomods to gain abilities, get weapon modifications to suite your style, like a silencer.. more praise.. more praise.. game is awesome... the first game really deserves a top place in the best videogames ever.. go play it..

The original is the greatest game ever created imo.

It wasn't really an FPS, and it wasn't really and RPG; it was a true hybrid. You should play it!

Main + points:

+ Story in both games was told superbly

+ Every action that you take or fail to take seems to have a reaction with NPCs and can determine how your game plays and the events that take place in the story.

+ You're given mission objectives and it is completely up to you how you acheive it. In the original I've played through 6 times and even on the 6th occasion I found ways of doing things that I had never noticed before and areas that I hadn't found.

For example: Do you sneak around the back picking locks? do you hack the computer and reprogram the turrets? do you go in as a 1 man assault team? do you snipe from a distance? do you kill anyone at all or knock them out? do you learn their gaurd routes and plant mines?

+ You have different augmentations that enhance your body and give you abilities such as: temporary invisibility to organics OR robots, strength enhancement, faster speed, silent running, emp shield, spy drones, vision enhancement, health regeneration.

+ The original only forced you to kill 3 people. The rest you could avoid killing if you wanted to.

+ The world was superb, atmospheric and felt alive (even with the old graphics). You could just stop and read information in newspapers, datapads and books. You could get candy and soda from vending machines. You could hack ATM terminals or use them legally. You could buy beer and it'd make you drunk (and people in the bar would respond to your drunkeness). People would wander around the market looking to barter and buy stuff.

+ The game was always set at night (not sure if the new one will do this, but it should do)

+ The games had multiple locations across the globe ranging from the streets of Hong Kong to Area 51 to a large indoor Pyramid with processed air in Cairo.

The games were great because quite simply you had a choice in how you did everything and gave a level of immersion that even current games with their shiny HD graphics have failed to acheive.

Thank you all for your responses. It really did give me a good impression of the game and it sounds like a game for me who loves stealth, choices and action. ANd it sounds like there's a good amount of replayability by simply tackling the same mission with different tactics and methods.

I might have to buy Deus Ex on Steam or something and if Deus Ex Human Evolution is similar to the first game, then I must say that I'll be very hyped for it :)!!

Stealth is essential in Deus Ex. Casual gamers beware, you get killed very easily and you might have to slowly crawl around after getting legs crippled with very little health packs around.

I used to love sneaking around an entire level and seeing if I could snipe/incapacitate every guard in the area without being seen.

Me too! In a very few levels, when more proficient with weapons and when I had foes actively hunting me, I was less stealthy and more brutal (but always using stealth and surprise as much as possible), but stealth was my favourite playing style in Deus Ex.

The original at the time was a masterpiece! I recommend it still but please take its age into consideration. It may not be as open as some games today but offers such different styles of gameplay which all feel rewarding. The gameplay mixed with the great level design (which gives you multiple ways to finish each level) really give you a sense of freedom.

Having loved the original I have hopes for the new Deus Ex, but without Warran Spector in charge i'm not overly confident. Fingers crossed!!!
