Forums - Sales Discussion - Gamestop quarterly results conference call "PS3 out of stock 80% of time"

@ solidsnake08

Thanks, thought it was pretty good myself.

@ smashchu2

We're just going to have to continue to disagree on this one. There is no way you're going to convince me that there is no other reason for PS3's sustained rise in sales YOY other than price cuts, just like I will never convince you of the opposite. My main reason for believing it is much more than the price cut is not only the continued YOY sales, but also previous examples of failed consoles. They went through tons of price cuts, but ultimately failed due to there not being enough to hook in customers. If the PS3 had nothing to back it up except price cuts, then it would have been gone a long time ago. Especially, with the equally priced 360, which shares 85-90% of the games on it.

On a positive note, though, thanks for giving credit when it is due.

Around the Network

The demand isn't really staggering, its a tad sad that they can't manage to keep the stock ample at all times, especially in a region that is considerably weaker than Eu/Others on hardware sales.

microsoft need to step up. the 360 hasnt had a big exclusive release in ages. they always going back to the same thing over and over to help them.. halo. banking everything on natal is risky, if it doesnt work out how they plan, sony will curb stomp and deliver the final blow im sure. you just never know how consumers will act towards a product. especially a $150 add on even if it does look good and like groundbreaking new technology.

if you want to talk about things going wrong, talk about xbox's exclusive games lineup.
fable 3's going to pc, alan wake hardly sold, halo reach made big promises but plays and looks the same.
the only good thing about xbox as it stands is gears of war 3 which wont even be close to uncharted 3.
i mean take away games you could buy for cheaper and run better on PC like mass effect, L4D, splintercell conviction etc......what does xbox really have? not much.

that's an interesting observation ;)

The truth is, though, they have had a couple big exclusives launch lately.  They just haven't sold like their previous exclusives.  I'm of course counting "console exclusives" in this.  You have Mass Effect 2, which sold ~500K less than the first, even with higher review scores and a larger install base.  Splinter Cell: Conviction recieved some really good review scores and had a higher install base, but it still will only go on to sell ~ the same as the 360 version of Double Agent.  The much internet hyped Alan Wake will probably only reach a mil, if that.  It really isn't looking profitable for MS to be shelling out the cash for these exclusives, whether timed or real.

I really don't see any other choice for MS but to put its faith fully in Halo and Natal.  I'm sure Reach will sell really well.  But, of course, it's not going to bring many new gamers in (read: be a system seller).  Natal is the tricky one.  I personally don't see it bringing many new gamers in, either.  I mean it's obvious they are aiming for the casual crowd, but Nintendo already owns them.  And they aren't going to get many of their hardcores on board, especially since even their largest franchise, Halo, isn't said to be using the tech.  Or if it does, it will be in a very limited capacity.  That's why I think Move will do better overall, even if it isn't a huge hit, since it has the ability to aim for the casuals and hardcore gamers.
