The question isn't about the franchise, though.

It's only about IX.

Uh.... this thread and the article its about 'Dragon Quest becoming the next Pokemon'.  The only way that can happen is how I laid out in my first post.

Dragon Quest IX is not going to become an overnight sensation.  Only games with multi-million dollar ad capmaigns like FInal Fantasy VII and Pokemon Red/Blue can do that.  They aren't going to throw 100 million dollars in advertising behind Dragon Quest IX.

Well, they did say that they think it has the potential to sell to a much, much wider audience than it currently does.... they compared it to either Professor Layton (which would be a good start) or Brain Training (which is ass-backwards insane)

And I certainly hope it can do that.  With well targeted marketing, I certainly think it could.  A goal like Professor Layton is not at all unattainable.

Seriously, all they'd need to do is make a commercial where they plaster the words 'From the creators of Chrono Trigger and Dragon Ball'.  Put some pretty gameplay and put it on all the major TV stations.  GUaranteed 1 million sales.  But I know NOA won't do that....

It's sad to say this. But I actually hope that the west doesn't get into DQ.

I don't want SE to pay more attention to DQ than FF. FF is better ; ;

Buyers nowadays don't really care that much about Chrono Trigger. They'll have a better campaign than that, if only because it'll be targeted in a way more likely to attract kids. Not that it's aimed at kids, but in that it won't be off-putting to them

There's room for more than one series you know.  Do you think Nintendo would want only Pokemon to do well, but not Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi, etc? You can have more than one popular RPG at a time.

And currently, that's what they have been doing.  Focusing all their attention on Final Fantasy (and Kingdom Hearts).  The shoe can be put on the other foot you know and we can claim SquareEnix has tunnel vision, only thinking about Final Fantasy and ignoring Dragon Quest.

Chrono Trigger sold half a million in America on DS.  Its certainly not forgotten.  And it couldn't hurt to at least put that on their advertising.

As for targetting Dragon Quest towards kids, they've already been doing that.  With the games localization filled with puns, accents, etc.  And look how far that's gotten them.

They should be focusing on keeping the game the way it was in Japan.  A game that targets all audiences, not just a specific demographic (such as kids).  Try to emulate its success, not alter it to fit a demographic they think will like it in America.  Even Pokemon is popular with people over the age of 18.  And that's because it doesn't just target kids (and doesn't do stupid junk like 'accents').

Come on thats a bad attitude.

FF is so big in the west now that S-E will never ignore it, FF13 sales further prove this.

there is room for another.

Dragon Quest needs an Anime here in the west and then all the little anime dorks will get addicted to DQ thus making it very very popular.

They actually did release the Dragon Quest Anime here in America.  However, it only had 13 of the episodes, they were heavily edited, and it only ran for a short time.

Such is the norm for Anime in America.  But it shows that they even tried to follow the Pokemon formula even before Pokemon existed.  Just all the editing and bad handling of Dragon Quest in the past kept it from becoming popular.
