Forums - General Discussion - 2010-2011 TV Upfronts: Renewals, Cancellations & New Shows Thread

It's that time for many people that if their favorite shows are in favor of renewal or in danger of cancellation. This is for the big 5 (or 4) broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, The CW, FOX & NBC). Considering cable networks don't do this every May, i respect them more than the big networks, but I like most TV shows on every other network (broadcast or cable/premium).

ABC:

Renewals- The entire comedy block has been highly successful lately, just don't count Hank as successful. It's been dead. Plus, fan favorites V & Castle has also been renewed, considering their new dramas have been striking out this past season.

Cancellations- FlashForward, which was touted as the next Lost, end up being lost in the ratings and interest. New dramas Eastwick, The Deep End & possibly Happy Town (weird name for a mystery drama) all failed to get renewed. Lost is retired for good & Ugly Betty is gone for good. Also fan favorite Better Off Ted is (insert word that rhymes with Ted), Romanticaly Challenged was ratings challenged & Scrubs (which should have ended after last season).

New for 2010-11: ABC orders 7 shows recently for the next year including another Jerry Bruckheimer show (remember the forgotten, I forgot about it) The Whole Truth, a lawyer show follows a unique narrative structure that shifts perspectives to keep viewers guessing. Ensemble documentary-style dramedy "My Generation" follows a group of former high school classmates. And Michael Imperioli-starring cop dramedy "Detroit 187" from ABC Studios will also be on ABC's schedule next season. Two single-camera sitcon projects: "Mr. Sunshine" starring Matthew Perry as sports manager and Jamie Tarses' "Happy Endings" starring Elisha Cuthbert, also the multi-cam romantic comedy "Better Together" about two couples in two very different relationships & superhero drama "No Ordinary Family," which stars The Shield's Michael Chilkis & Dexter's Julie Benz.

CBS:

So far, the only cancellation from CBS was Three Rivers, another failed Alex O'Loughlin project. If the Hawaii 5-0 remake is picked up and ends up canceled, that dude might need to leave CBS. Considering they are the #1 network again this year and the whole Charlie Sheen 2 1/2 Men if he departs (I don't know, I don't watch the show........that much). Plus, some favorites of mine HIMYM & TBBT are returning (not really a surprising renewal) and procedurals galore...another spinoff of a series (it might be Criminal Minds 2.0). That's all and now CBS' sister network......

The CW:

So far, the new series The Vampire Diaries (or a Darker version of Twilight) was the only new thing that got renewed. The new Melrose Place remake and The Beautiful Life:TBL is not getting a second chance. However, One Tree Hill & Life Unexpected are fighting spots to be renewed.

New shows are only dramas, but not the usual teen angsty rich socialite crap. Such as a remake of La Femme Nikita starring Maggie Q (M:I 3, Live Free or Die Hard) or Nomads, which follows a group of nearly broke young backpackers abroad who agree to earn money by working secret missions for the CIA.

FOX:

Since I don't give a flying f**k about American Idol, SYTYCD or The X-Factor, people might like Fox again, I Think. The late renewals of Lie To Me, Human Target, & Fringe make Fox kinda likable. Although canceling Dollhouse, 24 & Sons of Tucson left a sting (at least just Dollhouse), but canceling 'Til Death made the sting go away. Their new shows include the one format Fox needs now: live-action comedies. Example: Will Arnett's Running Wilde & Greg Garcia's single parent half-hour "Keep Hope Alive" and the male relationship comedy "Traffic Light". The network has greenlighted Shawn Ryan's latest police drama "RideAlong" and Texas-set drama "Lone Star".

NBC:

Last but not least, NBC has redeemed themselves by getting rid of The Jay Leno Show although Conan O'Brien lost his job but now works for TBS. First off, Chuck is saved!........again for 13 episodes......again. The Thursday Night Comedy Block has all been renewed. However, Law & Order: Original Flavor has been canceled after 20 years, as in not being the next Gunsmoke. At least NBC has picked up a lot of pilots recently.

New shows are JJ Abrams' Undercovers as well as other dramas Chase, Kindreds, Garza & The Event. New comedies are Love Bites, Outsourced, & Perfect Couples (Hint: On Perfect Couples, this will be the second time a Comcast --E!, G4, Style-- employee will work on NBC. Guess who is it?)

As for Heroes, It may not come back.

That's all.....for now.

Feel free to express.

The only drama show that I ever watched was house. I'm not really big on T.V. shows as it's just not really my thing. I'm more of a movie kind of a guy.

I keep hearing good things about the other two, but by the time I managed to watch an episode it was mid-season.  Probably not such a big deal with Community, but I don't like waiting that long to join.  I'll give them a shot when the DVDs come out though.
