Forums - Sales Discussion - Bold Prediction: Modnation Racer will be the best seller new IP this year.

i think it should sell very well, its a kart racer after all so should appeal to everyone.

possibly best selling new ip we will have to see

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

Around the Network

i don't think the game will hit 2 million lifetime. Will possibly hit 2 million lifetime. if Move goes well and boosts sales on the PS3 it might even reach 3 million. if ps3 owners are buying a racing game in 2010 it's GT5.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

@mr khan: We haven't seen a new JRPG IP break a million in years, save Inazuma, and that's hardly your typical JRPG. The Last Story may end up deserving of 2+ million sales, but I highly doubt it'll come close.

Though it's being published by Nintendo, so maybe they'll actually try to market the game in the West, ala Monster Hunter 3. Who knows, that may even start a trend for other publishers, which would be nice.

Yeah, I dunno what to think of TLS.  Mistwalker's other games haven't exactly been gigantic success stories sales wise, and neither have non-EAD/SPD new IPs from Nintendo this gen.  I'll need to wait and see more, but I doubt it breaks a million in Japan regardless.

For reference, here's the (new IP) Japanese RPGs that did break a million historically...

  • [FC] Dragon Quest (Enix) 1986
  • [FDS] Zelda no Densetsu II: Link no Bouken (Nintendo) 1987
  • [FC] Famicom Jump: Hero Retsuden (Bandai)* 1988
  • [GB] Makai Toushi SaGa (Square) 1989
  • [FC] Final Fantasy III (Square) 1990
  • [SFC] Seiken Densetu 2 (Square) 1993
  • [SFC] Chrono Trigger (Square) 1995
  • [PS] Arc the Lad (SCE) 1995
  • [GB] Pocket Monsters Aka / Midori (Nintendo) 1996
  • [SFC] Super Mario RPG (Nintendo) 1996
  • [GB] Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (Konami)* 1998
  • [PS] Parasite Eve (Square) 1998
  • [PS2] Kingdom Hearts (Square)* 2002
  • [PSP] Monster Hunter Portable (Capcom) 2006
  • [DS] Inazuma Eleven 2: Kyoui no Shinryukousha Fire / Blizzard (Level-5) 2009

I... don't consider MNR a new IP myself.

To me it's to LBP what Mario Kart was to Mario.

Would be a fair analogy if Mario Kart was made by a different developer and had different characters and didn't have "Mario" in the title. Otherwise, Modnation Racers is definitely a new IP (despite similar customization to LittleBigPlanet).

It's part of the "Create and Play" series though.  Which I feel is the IP.  MNR is a Sony owned game right or was I wrong on that?  I'm sure different developers handled mario kart then mario world.

Would you consider Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Music and Wii Fit the same IP since they are all part of the Wii series?

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Yes.
