Forums - General Discussion - Total Cost of Ownership

Come on man, a fun game system is a fun game system, it's not like I'm running around here saying SONY SUCKS MICROSOFT XNOTS, that would be foolish instead, I talk about the things I like, if it just so happens that I don't say something about Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo, it doesn't meant that I don't like one of the three, it just means that at that time I perfered to say something about that system, as far as I can remember I've only made two jokes about Sony in 355 posts..........unless I was making fun of someone for being a blind fanboy. One of which was on the same post of me making fun of Microsot and Nintendo as well so, I guess I'm a fanboy!!!!Oh, I'm not calling you a fanboy.

Relax man.. I'm not accusing you of anything. But the way you just ignored my "To be taken seriously" points was just cruel. Am I NOT right that to compare TCOs you have to compare WHAT you own? Feel free to correct me... It might lead to a good adult conversation.

I think you have a good point but could have said it better, it would have been clearer if you put in a chart and put the add-ons on there. We all know that for the initial price you get more for the PS3 but I think the point of this thread was to see which one would cost you more in the long run, if you want to do everything your system is possible of doing then your point seems more vaild. Like PS3 comes with blueray, the 360 and the Wii have no HD-DVD format for the initial price, so in that case PS3 wins but for the gamer who doesn't care about that, the Wii/360 may seem better because in the future they will be able to add it if they want it (oh course for the Wii you need to just buy a HD-DVD or Blueray player). Just saying 400 up front and 200 when/if i want it sounds better than 600 upfront. And I can't relax at work lol.......

Steve 3.2 said: Something that hasn't been discussed much is the 'Total Cost of Ownership' of all the new systems. Today, we evaluate everything from cars to water heaters to determine how much more something will cost us down the road. As such, I think it's only fair to give some thought about how much a video game system may run us over the course of it's lifetime. Anyone care to break them down to come up with some estimates? I've got the ball rolling below: 360: $400 Initial Purchase $50 - Extra Controller $600 - 10 New Games $40 - Charge and Play Kit x 2 $250 - Online Service Over 5 Years Total So Far - $1,340 ($1,090 w/o Live Gold) PS3: $600 Initial Purchase $50 - Extra Controller $600 - 10 New Games Free - Batteries (Included in controllers) Free - Online Service Over 5 Years Total So Far: $1,250 Wii: $250 Initial Purchase $500 - 10 New Games $20 - Extra Controller (You really need both the Wiimote and Nunchuck but you got the wii remote with 1 of the 10 purchased games) $30 - Batteries (Buy rechargeable NiMH) Free - Online Service Over 5 Years Total So Far: $800 So feel free to add whatever else you feel is necessary to own the system over 5 years. (10 games is based upon the attach rate of the last generation of system in the US.)
I edited the PS3 console cost to 600$ because they make SO few of the 20GB it's not even worth mention.. and the 2 Play and charge kits imply you want WIRELESS controllers for the 360 which is 50$ the wired controller is 39.99 the wireless is 49.99 In addition I'm going to assume 75% if not more buy the Wii play game, just for the "Free" wii remote.. or "10$ game" you decide

Again, you sort of focused too much on the trifle... but I suppose it's kinda of my bad too since you don't really know me, so sorry. The first paragraph, while being truthful, had no intention of fueling hate or causing trouble. Back on topic, PS3 games in 5 years will be better than any games out there for the simple reason of - *drumroll* - 50 gigs. More bang for your buck in any possible way. Some of you might say "How?" I would say... just as anything else evolves. Kojima himself said he needs those 50 gigs... I can't see a worthy enough port of MGS4 to the 360.. It's gonna suck hard. Extra content, better graphics, better stream of data... etc... so the PS3 players will eventually own more, in a way, than Wii/360 players. So even Casual gamers who bought the PS3 will own better games (maybe not in every way) even if they don't want/need it. Take Resistance for example. 14 gigs of data after compression. If they'd made a port to the 360, they will have to sacrifice 5 gigs (5 whole gigs of graphics, data etc)... That would make the game shorter, probably, online worse... and overall bring down the value of it. And I beg to differ that if I had said "400 upfornt and 200 later" it would sound better... I would get EATEN by 360 fanboys without clearing it up! Correct?? amirite?

True, with 50 gigs the PS3 will offer more graphically, that would hurt the 360 more than the Wii because the Wii isn't focused on graphics so in the future it will offer more gameplay wise than the 360/PS3 will ever be able too, so TCO will leave the 360 looking sour, while you pay less for the Wii and get graphics that are nothing compared to the PS3/360 but still good enough because the big thing is gameplay, and in the long run the PS3 cost less and you get more I see what your saying.

Sorry if this sounds to horrible for you, but I don't see the Wiimote's gameplay/fun factor lasting for 5 years... I don't see people having fun with it as much as they are today. I actually see more potential for the Sixaxis, primarily because of flying sims... (I'm a bit of a fan myself) How does the Wiimote handle flying games?? Can you hold the wiimote in a horizontal fashion? Doesn't it block the signal when you do that? I can't wait for Lair and Warhawk.. I don't even know which one I want the most because they both look fucking awesome!

thats wait for star fox and NiGHTS to come out before we pass judgement on how the wiimote can handle flying games.

Fine! Lets! I already know how Lair and Warhawk play... It's obvious really.

In time it won't be as exciting, it will become a usual thing for owners just as the regular controller is. In fact, I'd lay wager the tilt sensor on the Sixaxis would become mundane LONG before the dual motion sensors in the wii remote/nunchuck. Simply because Sixaxis is a basic control with tilt. Wii remote is totally different aside from the buttons. I see it lasting 5 years, I watched it in development got excited, I bought it was excited. I still get a kick out of messing with the motion controls to date(I play just about every day)
