Forums - Website Topics - Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love

It's almost funny how the same people who believe that "too many ads on a site" is a perfectly justified reson to block all of them, would instantly flame me if I would say that "I pirate games because they cost $60, if they would cost $5, I would buy them".

It doesn't work like this. That's how much the websites need to support themselves, you can't just make up your fictional world where a compromise would work.
Either support the websites, or admit that you don't care about them and you are hurting them for the lulz.

Too many sites use annoying advertising:
Popups
Expanding flash banners,
Sexual advertising.

Unfortunately a precedent has been set and there is no going back.

It's funny how many people in this thread post as though reading websites was a right, but getting ad revenue is a privilege. So many "I'd turn off my ad blocker if...." and "until then, I'm leaving it on". It sounds like these people think they are entitled to read whatever site they like, regardless of the cost to the site provider. It's an attitude that justifies any abuse of power, 'if I can do it, and it doesn't hurt me directly, why not? I feel entitled anyway.'

Entitlement is not based on your opinion. Anyone is entitled to block adds. That is a fact.

And the web site owner is entitled to block/ban you for doing so. Also a fact.

I will still block every add that: 1.) flashes unnervingly 2.) pops up 3.) is programmed so badly that it slows down my system

But are you entitled to view whatever sites you like, regardless of the cost to the provider when you give nothing in return? Especially when by doing so, you make it so that the people who accept the ads have to view more ads?

Yes, in this world you are.

I ask you, when do the forum posters get paid for creating the posts which make up this forum? Do they deserve a cut of the add revenue?

People are posting for their own satisfaction, to discuss things of interest to them. They are not trying to run a forum posting business.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

You're exactly right. That's my point.

I honestly understand your point ioi but I still want to protect myself from viruses and problems I had on your site in the past. I know you are working hard to prevent this problem. When I turn off my ad-blockers on your site the ads are really annoying. I would gladly give you a small donation via paypal to VGChartz (if you create such a thing and maybe remove some ads for those who support the site).

I still disagree with you on the argument that we have to accept the ads to visit your website. Also, I don't think your actual term of use (or the one a agree with in 2007) will win such a claim in court. But as many other members here i'll support the website. So the implantation of such a ad-free environment would be good (via a reasonable donation of course).

I was a member of a free-online game and there was a system like that we were able to make donation via paypal. There was even a little logo on the profile of members that support the game. This would be great. Just think about it.

Same here, disabled for vgchartz.com and I will do the same for other sites to see if their ads are obtrusive.

Part of the issue may be adblock blocking all ads by default.

Looks like i'll be heading back to kotaku then :/

you could do as I said and support us in the ways listed.. prevent this entire thing.

I would, but the ads stress my internet too much where it becomes unbearable. I live out in the sticks, so good internet isn't available unfortunately.

then digg articles, use other methods. Buy a gamer shit from Gamer Prints. Its very easy to support us. Tons of ways.

I'll look into it. But I hope you guys don't pull the plug on me. Would be slightly unfair to those who are in my situation. :D

All I'm hearing is a big whinge. Your profile says you live in the USA. I'm willing to bet that you're internet speed is faster than mine. It's officially rated at 0.5 Mb/s, but I seem to live at the end of the line because I've never got anything to load/download at higher than 70 kb/s. I use Chrome and no adblocker and the site is fine.

Now c'mon. What's your internet speed? Also what browser do you use (and if you say anything except Chrome, then you are a very selfish man, disabling adverts to increase speed when the problem is actually your broswer)
