Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Former DICE CEO: 'Wii is a virus.... not a games game machine'

Despite the Nintendo Wii dominating sales charts and setting records left, right and centre, it's still never really won over the games industry. Comments from Sega and Capcom have only helped to fuel the negativity surrounding the console, and it's apparently a feeling that's echoed among other developments too.

We recently had the opportunity to catch up with Fredrik Liliegrin, the former CEO and co-founder of DICE, who is currently running a new company called Antic Entertainment. Amongst other things, some of which can be seen in part one of the inteview, we were able to ask him about his opinions on the Wii.

Gaming Union: Are you surprised with the negativity surrounding the Wii from various groups, even after all this time and its success? Would you develop a Wii game if you were a traditional developer?

Fredrik Liliegrin: If I got paid to develop a Wii game I would do it. I would not put an original IP on the Wii today unless I thought I had an absolute home run.

Gaming Union: Why not?

Fredrik Liliegrin: Because the Wii, to me, I would describe it as a Virus, that doesn't stick. Everyone comes home, it's a toy, people have got to realize the Wii is a toy, not an entertainment focused product. People come home, someone, they play Wii for a bit, feel it's really cool, blah blah blah, they go out and buy one. Ask people how often they play the Wii, that are not the core game consumer that buys one because they have an Xbox 360 and a Wii or a PlayStation 3 and a Wii. The people that only own the Wii, ask that consumer how often they use their machine. They just don't use it, it was cool, but they're not gamers, so they put it away. Other than the Wii Fit phenomenon that helped a lot of people get a nice cutie voice telling that they're fat and need to go work out, they need to find other alternatives. Nintendo is smart in that way in that they realize this is not a video game machine, this is not a games game machine.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

I can see why he's a former CEO...

now I know why wii games don't sell, because this is what the developers (well I think most of them, maybe?) think of their wii consumers.

The Wii is not an 'entertainment focused product', but a toy? Okay, even of that were true, what is a toy, then? Not entertainment focused? XD I guess his vision of entertainment is movies.

But, it's apparently not a video games machine? That's the only thing it does, play videogames. What about the PS360 then, they play movies as well, so they must be even less of a video game machine? Man that guy's daft, it's hilarious. XD

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be the GREATEST game EVER made!!!

I'd take a bullet for Square-Enix!

What an idiot! Sounds like a bitter, jaded, never-had-it developer who doesn't understand what "fun" is to me.

I think the word "former" pretty much sums up the results of his short-sightedness and his relevance in one word.

Unless the videogame industry figures out how to make a living creating innovative products on the Wii, it is going to cause itself to face contraction and numbers of people falling to the way side. The idea that you think you can serve the same niches, and try to replace the likes of the Call of Duty series, or Guitar Hero Rock Band with another product, but spend $30 million dollars for higher production value is setting yourself up for being put out of business.

How about creating new market spaces which appeal to new people, while keeping production costs down? Nah, that is just too much work. Yeah, follow the formula where you wait until a new genre like tower defense appears, and then BLAMMO use licensing of South Park, and also add a killer 3D engine, complete with cut scenes and a professionally written script, and BLAMMO expect to rule a niche that someone else broke ground it. Yes, we need more Tower Defense games with $40 million production budgets. Wait, am I daft here? Of course, I meant to say First-person shooter. Replacing "tower defense" with "first-person shooter" makes the business model more sane, right?

Bad example..that just supports his theory...the new one has been out what 4 weeks?  Its already dropped out of the top 100.  Last week it sold less than 5,000 copies...yet Just Dance which isnt really much of a game at all is still at the top...kinda supports the "its a toy" argument.  Everyone I know has a Wii, my in laws, my parents, siblings, etc...but Im the only one who actually has games beyond Mario Kart that anyone would concider "core" games, im the only one who doesnt have Carnival Games or Wii Fit...games will sell on the Wii but to actually make money developers are going to have to focus on games for people who dont play games, like it or not we "core" gamers will have to be second or even 3rd fiddle...if we are lucky, we will still be thrown a bone once in a while.

Just shows how out of touch most 'execs' are with the 'new gaming public'.
The gaming scene is changing so fast that some are not able to keep up with the pace.
I admit its probably hard for someone to see what makes the Wii different and fun when they build up negative impressions of it before playing it and then only give it one shot for a hour or two. However any real gamer who has played any of the great games on it knows that it delivers a truly unique and fun gaming experience.

Sure I own almost every gaming console in the past 15 years but even I can see what makes the Wii special, unique and most importantly fun. Look forward to more changes from Nintendo since if it wasn't for them, we'd all still be in the more graphics, more buttons = more awesomness phase which was getting old quick. gameplay always trumps graphics which is something many devs are forgetting
