Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony Cambridge working on a new IP for ps3

Sony's Cambridge Studio is one that was acquired very early on in the PlayStation business, and they've been with Sony since 1997. They've worked on numerous games such as MediEvil, LittleBigPlanet (PSP) and much more.

The Cambridge Studio has also contributed to Killzone 2, Heavenly Sword, Wipeout, PlayTV and EyeToy.

Sony recently updated their website showing a vacancy for a lead PS3 engineer. The job vacancy states:

"We are looking for an experienced lead programmer to head the engineering team for our next PS3 game title as it enters the production phase..."

This means that they are definitely developing a game, and not an application such as PlayTV or PlayStation Home.

"...The position offers an excellent opportunity to play a key role in the shaping and delivery of an exciting new IP for the studio, and would suit a senior engineer wishing to pursue a managerial track to their career path."

The Cambridge Studio hasn't fully developed a PlayStation 3 game since the console released, and have only worked on PlayTV and PSP. Their experience with Eyetoy suggests that this new IP will be a motion control game. Whatever it is, let's hope it is good.

Can't wait to find out what it is.  Sony Cambridge are most known for their work on the MediEvil series back in the ps1 days, a few random survival horror games last gen, MediEvil's resurrection on PSP, and most recently, LittleBigPlanet PSP.

Entering production, that means it'll come out in ?

It's open to interpretation.  Some devs refer to the whole development cycle when using the term productioin, while others use the term to reference the period of full production.

For example, Insomniac has a two year dev cycle, but one year is mostly a design phase while the second year is their production year (with the bulk of their studio moving from one game to the other every other year - Reistance 2 in 2008, Ratchet in 2009).  Similarly Guerilla Games claims to have only had a full production period of two years for Killzone 2, even though its full developemnt cycle was close to four years.

On the contrary, Naughty Dog cites an 18 month production phase for Uncharted 2, which includes just about the entirety of its development.

At best Cambridge's title is only a year away.  More likely two years.

Of course, they could be hiring for a second IP they're working on. I have my doubts that they've only worked on LBP PSP over the past 4-5 years, and given all the old rumors of a ps3 game being well underway at Cambridge, I wouldn't be surprised if they're gearing up to finally announce one project and expanding to start production on another.

Maybe they're taking over some work from their nearby fellow team? The Getaway and that other title would be nice bring-back titles :)

Their last major console title was 24: The game.

It got 62 metacritic.

Their last title which was Little Big Planet: Portable got 87% metacritic based off already created and high rated I.P.

I don't think this is that interesting until they show something of true worth off.

I hope they make a survival horror game, and one thats not all action, but actually SCARES you. it would be great. If they took advantage of the Cell Prossesser then a survival horror game could be great.

I will be enjoying this game next year the latest, can't wait!

Odd. Future. Wolf. Gang. Kill. Em. All. OFWGKTA Don't give a fuck!

Fuck Steve Harvey. FREE EARL!

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be the GREATEST game EVER made!!!

I'd take a bullet for Square-Enix!

I should apply for that job and make my future game called Booty Hunters exclusive for the PS3 of course.
