I understand you don't like my opinions, but you will be unable to change them. As a tech enthusiast I find the PS3 the most interesting device currently available on the market and have been vividly following its techical progress. Like development techniques used in games like Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2.

The userbase size is less crucial for me than top class software, although without a solid userbase the latter won't happen but the PS3 already has a solid userbase and top talents working on top content.

Well now, you're the first tech enthusiast I've met who obsesses over 5yr old technology. The worlds moved on, but I guess you haven't - which probably explains the amiga fascination.

You just wait until the PS3 starts running Crysis at 1080p 120 fps with textures better than a SLI setup.

@ NJ5

Crysis will probably lead to various multi-platform sacrifices, but I think the core engine will do fine on the PS3 (it's a pretty well designed game engine and the Crytek team is technically very talented).

Running '1080p @ 120 FPS' vs '720p @ 720p @ 60 FPS' or rock solid 30 FPS is not a real game changer. Real game changers are for example more complex gaming worlds, more onscreen activity, better AI, better physics, special effects and such.

The PS3 can do such things better technically, but considering this is a multi-platform title I think it's unlikely we will see much or anything to this extend. The same with regard to Blu-Ray capacity, I don't think they will add (much) better gaming assets or include improved 7.1 surround audio, etc.

So I think the 360 and PS3 version of Crysis will be about the same, but quite good technically compared to most multi-platform titles.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

First I think you miscalculate about 1 and a half year from release and secondly I wouldn't call it an obsession but rather a hobby. I stated before release I considered the PS3 to be ahead of its time technology (how many PC games for example take good advantage of Blu-Ray at this point? and no current general market PC x86 processor is able to top the Cell in terms of raw performance).

I'm a vivid supporter of optimised software. My roots lie within the Amiga community and have been active in the demoscene as well, I bought one in 1989, a system based on 4 year old technology by then (I was a preteen when the original Amiga was released), but much better than expensive latest PCs at the time for gaming, multi-media and various areas of productivity (and DOS was a horrible single tasking operating system).

Gaming example, PC gaming vs Amiga gaming in the 80s and early 90s (note various games exclusive to the Amiga were far more impressive than these examples):

From a technical perspective consoles are interesting because it makes sense to go full force with optimising software for them. PCs with their many different ever changing configurations and inefficient bloated OS is far harder to get the most of (as well as it's obsolete x86 architecture).

Before the PS3 launched it was clear to me it would took a while before we would get to see what the PS3 is truly capable of, but it was clear to me where this could lead to eventually. Ken did an amazing job with the general design.

I guess being a 'vivid' supporter of technology means you don't need to know anything about technology itself. PC games have no need for bluray, Core i7s beat the shit out of the Cell (essentially a stripped down PowerPC core +SPUS) at most tasks that matter - everything else a modern day GPU can do far better. And if the x86 architecture is obsolete then what about the Cell? Sony has dropped it, and its future looks to be nothing more than a novelty, a design dead end if you will that may one day be used in a couple of embeded solutions. If its lucky.

And quit posting this amiga crap again. Nobody gives a fuck. Go make a thread in the general section, maybe you'll find someone who can tolerate your irrelavent comparisions between the amiga and ps3. Maybe.

Aha

If you see a guy running next to a car, and the car goes a bit faster, do you say the car is "outperforming" the running guy?

Two better examples would be.

Does Big Mama's house achieve more then Citizen Kane because it made more in theatres in actual dollars not adjusting for inflation

Or does a movie theatre in Paris France outperform a Movie theate in Paris Ohio because it oversells a movie by 1 person.

Either way, it's kinda of a pointless argument when the movie thatre in Paris France has undersold the Paris Ohio movie theatre by a few million.

Innovation is not the same thing as technology advancement.

It's possible to be innovative while using age old technology.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Look dude, we are on SALES web site in SALES forum disscussion. When we say asystem performed better,here we mean it outsold something.

I wonder how good where the PS1 sales in it's first 3 years to be on par with PS3.

I'd like to have a graph on both 3 sony consoles LTD sales.

There's a Spin here.

Comparing a system(PS3) to another that hadn't that much of spectacular sales before a certain period (PS1) doesn't make that system a lot better from thin air because the old system wasn't selling that good till a certain point after 3~4 years in the market.

For a reason no one compares PS3 sales with PS2 sales, because there, the scenario is much different.

Who's with me?

Congrats to Sony !

PS3 is very successful. I couldn't say if it's more or less successful than PS1, I'd say both are equally successful.

Now PS3 has the potential to sell even more in the years to come...

Like MikeB said, it's good to see a technically advanced product succeed. PS3 definitely helped Bluray succeed as a superior format even compared to the dead HDDVD.

Something the PC market wasn't able to achieve.

Nobody says there aren't more powerful PCs today, but they cost a lot more and Sony both has top level content AND advanced technology. PC market now lacks content... You've got a handful of 360 / PC games like Mass Effect 2 but otherwise, piracy definitely hurt this market contentwise.

Yes there's spin, the same spin that Crazzyman was using when comparing PS3 to PS2 (due to the staggered launches). That comparison eventually got derailed when the negative factors caught up, which is why you don't see many people using it anymore.

There's also what Kasz216 said, of course...

PS1 = first place

PS3 = third place (second if everything goes well for Sony)

PS1 = 66% market share

PS3 = nowhere near 66% market share

Sorry but they're not equally successful, even if someone found a way to get PS3 sales to appear similar to PS1 sales.
