Forums - Sales Discussion - Why PS3 is selling well in Europe.

Now if you cross that list with games which have been well reviewed (90% or higher on Gamerankings.com) you get: USA: - Sony Studio Santa Monica : God of War - Naughty Dog : Jak and Daxter - Insomniac : Rachet and Clank Japan: - Polyphony Digital : Gran Turismo 3 As everyone has always said, the Playstation brand has always sold based on the strength of its third party support; if it loses third party support it is not that strong of a platform.
now lets correct your list since some of those titles did sell a million Sony Studio Santa Monica : God of War (PS2), God of War II (PS2), Twisted Metal 3 (PS1) Twisted Metal Black (PS2), Naughty Dog : Crash Bandicot 1,2, 3 (PS1), Jak and Daxter 1, 2, 3, X(PS2) Insomniac : Rachet and Clank 1,2,3, Resistence fall of Man (PS3 Zipper Interactive : SOCOM : US Navy SEALs (PS2) Cool Boarders 2,3 Polyphony Digital : Gran Turismo (PS1), Gran Turismo 3, Proloog en 4 (PS2 Sony Studio London: (Studio Soho, Studio Camden) : Eye-toy games, The getaway Clap Hanz : Hot Shots Golf

I thought the list was cluttered so I tried to list series rather than specific games ... I also specified that I was only looking at PS2 games (mainly because I think including Playstation 1 games is pretty pointless because, at this point in time, no one cares about some of the series which were popular on the PS1) I do admit I missed the Twisted Black Series, and I couldn't find the ATV Offroad Series on his list anywhere ... Anyways, my point was essentially what fooflexible said ...
fooflexible said: Every system has solid first party offerings so it's pointless throwing out names. What you want to throw out there is sequals to very big franchises that will generate huge buzz, and perhaps even more important something that will come out soon.
It makes sense to bring up games like Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime because these games are critically acclaimed and have sold well and are comming out this year; it may make sense to mention games like Animal Crossing and Super Smash Bros because of the sales these games have had on recent systems, and these games are also comming out this year. Making a list of 100+ games that have been released over a 10 year period where most of the games sold poorly and did not recieve stellar reviews is pointless.

FishyJoe said: Nintendo sells a lifestyle. Nintendo's commercials not only show the gameplay, but they sell a lifestyle. Their commercials show people having fun together with other people. Sony is trying to sell a console, which simply means nothing to a large segment of the population. Their commercials almost seem isolated, anti-social, cold.
This is a very interesting, and I think accurate, comparison of their NA commercials. The European "this is living" ads I wouldn't typify as "isolated" or "cold," but more just as bizarre, somewhat obnoxious nonsense. What are the 360 and Wii ads for Europe like?

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Sony owns Europe as much as it owns Japan. Whether it continues to sell well in the near future doesn't make much difference. It's only US where the other two even have what resembles a prayer.

So, not at all?

First, lets eliminate games which have not sold more than 1 Million units worldwide and were not released for the PS2:
MAYBE YOU SHOULD ELIMINATE OKAMI(just for example) or ICO, or Shadow Of Colossus ? which has not sold more than 1 mln??? of`course if you don`t understand, that those games are genius, and you care only about sales... then this topic is off.

Every 5 seconds on earth one child dies from hunger...

2009.04.30 - PS3 will OUTSELL x360 atleast by the middle of 2010. Japan+Europe > NA.

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

What are you talking about? Sony owning Japan? Check the numbers on Wii vs PS3 and DS vs PSP sales in Japan and you'll see this is definitely not the case. PS3 seems to have a better chance of coming out on top in the U.S. than Japan.

never seen a x360 ad but the wii ads are currently focusing on Miis and having fun "cartooning" your friends, [ which, btw, i just did on thursday with some of my friends for a good hour, even though we've been playing the wii since launch, still fun...]. the first serie of ads we had (in france) was the ones we saw on the net with the camera focused on people playing and enjoying themselves rather than the game screen.

PS2 has 80% of Europe and Japan. Microsoft's got a slight edge on Nintendo in Europe, while despite all the talk of how much Xbox failed in Japan, Gamecube was only twice as successful as it, but at the end of the day, both ultimately ended up with Sony's scraps. Sony looks to have a bit more of a fight on its hands to reclaim Japan, but I'd be surprised if they don't jump over Wii in Europe this year.

Maybe I misunderstood the point of your list but I assumed that when you said "you won't be able to play any sequels of these game on any other system apart sony's platforms, and Europeans understand that" that you meant that these games were the reasons why people would buy a PS3 in Europe; if a game doesn't sell well it is not a reason for someone to buy a system to play its sequels. If you want to talk about why an individual should buy a system we can get into a discussion of quality; and yes I think that ICO, Shadow of the Colossus and Okami are reasons you should buy a PS2 ... whether you should buy a PS3 to play their sequels largely depends on whether the studio even exists after such poor sales.
