Btw, for those saying this is all Sony's fault, and they're stupid to let this happen.....

"Disney asked that future Spider-Man films be a 50/50 co-financing arrangement between the studios, and there were discussions that this might extend to other films in the Spider-Man universe"

Sony would have been pretty weak to roll over on a demand like that. Disney already throws it's weight around enough in Hollywood as it is.

AAANNNDD a sense of not letting Sony just walk around with the Marvel brand willy nilly was a good idea why?

Ignore Spiderverse for a moment, and remember the rest of the output. I like the Amazing series well enough, but intervention was needed.

Pretty sure Venom was the superhero equiv of a Bay Transformer film.

Also lest we forget: Emoji Movie.

First off, the Emoji movie is irrelevant in this discussion. Venom....I haven't seen it, but it made over $800m, without even having Spiderman in it. Say what you will about it's quality, it was a massive success financially speaking. It's true that Sony missed the mark somewhat with the Amazing Spiderman movies, particularly the second, but even so, no mainline Spiderman movie has ever failed to cross $700m. It's not like Marvel stepped in and turned a complete nothing franchise into a winner here. So for Disney to think they deserve not only to get 50% of each movie they're directly involved in (they got 5% and merchandising rights under the old agreement), but also 50% of movies that Sony make independently of them in their Spider Verse or whatever…..that's just absurd. Sony absolutely has no need to let themselves get strong armed into such a deal. They can make money with Spiderman just fine on their own.
