Democracy isn't simply for the people, by the people. It's for "your" people, by "your" people. As soon as "your" people, becomes 'everyone's' people, democracy in whatever form, no longer works properly. This is the reason why the UK and the EU are in this mess, and same goes for the US in their own way. When 'everyone's' beliefs, morals and rules, etc, are no longer the building blocks of "your" system, a democracy doesn't work unless you change it as well, to fit the changes of 'everyone's' ethics. That's not to say democracy only works if 'everyone' is always 100% in agreement, but the core principles must be aligned or it won't function as intended. This is part of the reason for individual countries and their borders.
It isn't coincidence why you heard the US media and it's 'followers' promoting 100% democratic voting considering the popular vote in 2016, and why they don't seem to care much about borders, especially right now. That is not how the US system works however, and for good reason.
