How about we all stop expecting photo realism and start focusing on just great, original and innovate games again? That would solve just about everything.

Photo-realism is a trap in my opinion. I thought I wanted photo-realism until we began getting closer and closer to it. I don't mind very realistic games as we have now but I'd rather they push complexity, technology, depth of field, permanent fluidity (60fps throughout games and no frame drops) etc, rather than having games that look exactly like movies.

I don't want to one day play a video game that looks like I'm playing a movie. There's a quality in images that look not super realistic that I really appreciate, it's part of the magic of video games but they must remain video games and not become interactive movies. I guess the soon to be released Dragon Quest 11 is a good example, not photo realistic because game-realistic.

I'm ok with photo-realism if we're talking VR. But outside of that? My favorite games are all 8/16-bit. Seriously. I love a lot of 3D games but, the ones I can always replay over and over and over again seem to be the simplest ones. That has to speak to something. Right?
