I dunno, I think FFVI has the best set of important shocking scenes.

1 - Kefka killing Leo
2 - Kefka poisoning Doma
3 - Kefka blowing up the world
4 - Celes trying to commit suicide (the entire island scene is heartwrenching)
5 - The opera house.
7 - The entire doomtrain scene where Cyan loses his family for good.
8 - the final Fight with ALL 14 OF YOUR CHARACTERS and dancing mad.

what I'm trying to say is that game is awesome. While the gameplay itself was pretty simplistic and dare I say primitive (it was great for its time), the story and characters remain, in my opinion, the best evolved and well done not only in its series, but of all videogames. I honestly don't think there were as many good scenes in any other FF game, not even 10 or 7, which I think were the next best when it comes to story. wait, or IV, that was very good as well.

FFVII's Aeris Scene actually didn't do anything for me. part of it was the fact that I knew it was coming, but wit Sephiroth coming down from above like that, cape spread out...it just made me think "Classic case of style over substance", even back when I was 12.

The only time I cried in a FF game was at the end of X, something about that game really hit home with me. VIII had a lot of powerful scenes as well, but they were all later in the game, most notably after squall finally stops being a whiner and admits his love for Rinoa...once he got off his ass that story got very intimate and beautiful. Them floating in space thinking they were going to die, just wanting to be in each other's arms for their last moments is one of the most touching FF moments ever.

FFIX had a lot of WTF moments where so many places got destroyed, but oddly none stand out. After cleyra is leveled, the other ones just don't have much emotional impact. still shocking, but nothing compared to VI's shocking moments.

XII was a great game, but for the life of me I can't recall a single significant event in that game...I just remember how awesome Balthier was.

IV is still fresh in my mind, but sadly I haven't played that one to death yet, so I don't know as much about it...but characters sacrificed themselves so often in that game it was kind of astounding you HAD a party at the end of the game.

I'm sure Final Fantasy Tactics gets a mention here...
