I like the black better aesthetically, though for some reason it adds strain to my eyes. Maybe it's the text.

Yep. He hasn't adjusted the text/fonts of the profile pages yet. Just getting the new modes all fixed up first.

Dark Mode’s great. It’s way easier on the eyes, so I can look at VGC even longer.

I haven't tried it yet but I will soon. I use Twitter a lot and there's an option for "dark mode" to kick in after a certain hour. If you haven't already, would you consider an option for dark mode to turn on automatically after like 7pm or something?
