Sony is kinda dumb with this franchise, in my opinion. Which made more money this gen: Halo or GT?
Let's see... GT -> One 4million+ seller prologue game (GT5:P) sold at a lower price, plus a possible 10 million seller (GT5)
against...
Halo -> One 11 million+ seller (Halo3), plus one 2 million+ seller RTS game (Halo Wars), plus one semi expansion pack with 6 million+ sales (Halo: ODST), plus ANOTHER possible 10 million seller (Halo Reach), plus toys, plus books, plus animations...
Mario -> Well, i could enumerate everything, but let's just say: Lots and lots of money.
Damn, Sony flagship franchise gives back so much less than the others (Mario and Halo) it's ridiculous.

You got it so wrong.
Is GT a series that you can release in short bursts aka milk? No. Can you release GT toys? Hell no. But what you can do with GT is set up tournaments. Famous racers from all over the world race in this GT championship thing. It's a totally different thing.
|
No, you can release GT in short bursts and milk it.
That's exactly what the prologue series is.
|
When was prologue released? Dam short bursts that!!
|
The prologue series are the short bursts.
They're the game being released before the Final game is realsed.
Your seriously trying to tell me that something like HALO: REACH or HALO: ODST(? I don't actually like halo.) are more "milking" then the prologue series? The Prologue series which are basically incomplete versions of a game that's being released later versus the Halo games which have new content? Someone buying ODST got an expansion game to Halo 3... but at least they gont content different from Halo 3.People who buy Prologue get no content special to prologue... all the GT team did was realease "what they had so far".Furthermore their were 4 GT games released last generation... 6 if you count special Japanese versions (which i'd say was milking.)VS 4 Halo games so far this generation. The difference being that all the Halo games offered different expierences... while half the GT games were redundant.
GT is a much more milked franchise then Halo.
|
Globally in 12 years, 6 GT games have been released. For Halo in 9 years, 5 have been released. I would say Halo was the more milked but by very little. Add in Reach and GT5 this year Halo starts to stand out as the chedder (milk based product). I have'nt included GT psp as this is not a console game but you can include it if you wish.
|
That's completly disengenious though, since it includes this generation, which only is "less milked" because GT5 has been delayed 2-3 times already.
They should be about to release a GT6 prologue if they were on scheudle.
|
They will be what, 8 months behind the only release date they have officially stated. You are dealing in what ifs and maybes not actual reality. They are both milked but come on, to state GT is much more milked than Halo is clearly rubbish. Halo wars? come on.
|
Something doesn't have to be "officially stated" to be delayed.
GT clearly is more milked than Halo.
Halo Wars was a complety different kind of game the Halo 3.
Now Gran Turismo 5 Prologue... how much of that game was extra work that wouldn't have had to be done anyway?
A couple menus... maybe?
|
Ah, you are saying it would have sold regardless of whether the word Halo was in the title or not? Both prologues were not add ons but tasters which cost half the amount of a full priced game. tasters of games that have or will be released well after a year. sure that's milking but not to the extent of making an RTS and slapping halo on the cover. And yes a date for release of a game has to be announced then missed for it to be delayed.
|
1) the "taster" sells about 1/8th of the content for half the price with no extra effort. Nobody else has the gall to even release such a thing. The prologues are the worst case of milking i've ever seen. 2) Halo wars is set in the halo universe and is about combat... just like Halo. It shares the same setting. It's NOTHING like say Mario Tennis where for no reason the mario people are playing Tennis. It's the halo people doing what they ALWAYS do however in a different gameplay type. One that's more Macro then the FPS. That's not milking. Milking would be "Halo golf". |
I agree that the prologues are milking it but 1/8 of the content with no extra effort? what is 1/8 of that that is not yet been made? Are you really going to tell me that Fps fans are into RTS games, yes some are of course. 360 RTS numbers: HW=1,753364. C & C red alert 3=310000. It out sold C & C by about 5x. Are you really going to say that with out the words Halo on the front it would have sold as well. Don't get me wrong fair play, I'm sure a whole load of people played an rts when they wouldn't have usually. There are people who love prologue, it has had lots of updates and from what i could tell by the academy demo its nothing like 5. Both have milked there audience and on the whole most have lapped it up. I know you will want the last say on this but for me this will be my last post on this one (unless you come back with something that outrageous!) I understand your stance i just don't agree with it.
|
I'm saying that GT will have about 8 times more cars and tracks if not more then the Prologue.
As for Halo Wars. Sure some of the sales were because of the name, I'm sure the same is for Gran Turismo.
As for it's sales vs C&C Red Alert... it's important to note Halo Wars is the first RTS game made specifically for consoles.
It's a lot better in interface and otherstuff because of this instead of being a bastardized PC port.
They put REAL effort into this game to make a totally new game that's totally based on it's IP and makes total sense within the framework of the franchise.
The Halo game i'd accuse of being milking is Halo: ODST and it's the only game I'd accuse of this. It was marketed mostly as an "expansion" pack along the lines of "Dynasty Warriors: Empires" or the like... and the short campaign gives it away as much.
For something to be considered milking i'd think it has to either show little effort by the developers or be a setting or situation compeltly out of place for the setting of the universe.
Even being completly out of place for the universe I think should involve "little effort" honestly. Mario Kart makes little sense considering the Mario Brothers world, but at the same time there is so much effort put into the development of the games it's hard to call it milking.
The prologue games... likely took little or no extra work to produce and are somewhat overpriced. People like em and that's cool I'm not going to get on peoples case about it... but it's about the most blatant milking of fans and a franchise i've seen in gaming.
