Forums - General Discussion - Pope condemns gay equality laws ahead of first UK visit

Its abhorrent and offensive to say that someone should cure catholicism?

I agree. But the resentment one and afrontment with the above remark makes one feel similar to many homosexual people who are denied the right to marry or suffer from derogative attitudes towards their sexuality.

If you don't like it, they surely don't aswell. Maybe people who are afronted by attacks on religion and churches should have a bit of empathy (and vice verca of course) and realise that both sides are hurt by each others remarks.

The simple solution is to live and let live.

I am neither gay nor Catholic.  Both of those comments were way out of line and HIGHLY insulting.

But as you said, live and let live.  The Catholic Church should be allowed to live as it wishes too.  That is all the Pope said.  Many people in this thread have insinuated he made some broad attack on the rights available to gays beyond the Church.

I've seen gay rights groups using these comments to imply that the Pope is attacking women's equality too.  Something that simply was not said or implied, and which this Pope has no history of doing.

That sounds like the Pope.

The old Pope was a lot cooler.

Possibily involved in organized crime... but a lo cooler.

This Pope really was a reactionary measure vs the advances John Paul put foward to the Church.  I remember people were expecting the first Black or Latino pope... or one from one of the less conservatie sets.

However, they ended up with this Pope... under what is believed to be a "Sarah Palin" like compromise.

Nobody really wanted him, but nobody really disliked him too bad... plus he's so old.

Though as for what the Pope is saying... eh. I can never figure out stuff with these laws.

For example, the US has "equal rights" laws. Yet at the same time... the PGA doesn't need to legally allow women in because it's a "private club".

Yet these complaints are made over here all the time too... even though the church... being a private institution has the right to refuse service to anybody.

Yet, those laws were passed to prevent businesses from excluding people and if you refused to hire someone because they were black it's a lawsuit, or the back of the bus/refuse to serve in restruants you'd be sued.

Honestly I can't figure the whole thing out with how it works now.

They're all old, but this guy is 82.  He was 77 when elected.

For a comparison John Paul was 58 when elected.  Usually the aim for popes around 60... and just assassanate them if they don't like them.

Ok, there is no proof John Paul 1 was assassanted but dieing 33 days into your papacy when you've got to have some of the best medical care around... seems farfetched to me.  I mean no autopsy on the body of the POPE.  Really the Catholic Church doesn't want to make sure no foul play effected the spirtual link between god and the earth?

One of only two conspiracies i believe in.

Never understood what an individuals sexual orientation has to do with me. If people find happiness and fulfilment from someone of the same sex, great.

How does this impact on my life? In fact, the less men I have to compete with for women the better; )

My thoughts exactly :)

I share Kate Beaton's affection for John Paul II over the new Benedict. As has been said: I disagreed with a lot of his policies, but he was so damn likable and charismatic and full of the whole love and peace thing.

I had to stop reading that to laugh at an unintended joke.

The joke being that new scary German pope is only 7 years younger then beloved middle eastern possible connected to organzied crime pope.

The old pope was a lot more... what you'd expect a pope to be though.

The current pope seems more suited to be Pope of the Holy Lodis Empire or something.

Matsuno is making that game right now, I imagine.

I wish I could be a priest, I think Jesus kicks ass. I'm not a Christian but I love his message, that a whole bunch of Christians seem to have selective memory about. Or just add stuff to, "Jesus said to love everyone. . . but not gays. . ." See, Jesus didn't say that second part.
