numonex said: Why are people bad mouthing Edge. They are one of the most reputable European reviewers in the business. They mark video games tough as they should. Why should 9's and 10's be given out to every friggin exclusive game?
I would be questioning review sites who give high scores to games which do not deserve them. |
Edge and Eurogamer are my two most respected reviewers because they actually use a 1-10 scale and actually critique a game like a movie critic does a movie, instead of 99% of reviewers out there that are in the 6-10 range and whose sole purpose seems to be just to say "buy or don't buy". Most reviews are trash, if gaming is to evolve as an artform we need reviewers who look at games with a very critical eye and take a no-bs approach to it.
Of course Sony fans hate Edge and Eurogamer after both gave MGS4 an 8, which IMO is exactly what the game deserves, it has way too many problems, one of which is insanely long cutscenes, almost like an interactive movie. Killzone 2, if you remove the art direction, is a copy paste of any other shooter. Mind you, I wouldn't give ODST a 9 as well, that's ridiculous.
Heck, Edge gave Mass Effect 1 a 5, and even though it was my favorite game this gen (now it's ME2), I don't agree with the grade, but I understand why they did it, some sections of the game are brilliant, but others are horrible (like the Mako stuff).
Heavy Rain looks like a quality game that is expanding on territory seldom used in games. However, Quantic Dreams themselves have classified their game as an interactive movie, so they lost my interest right there. I wanted to like this game, but every article and video i've seen just makes me think it's a boring game with QTE filled cutscenes. I buy a game to play, not to watch, I thought we were done with the whole "interactive movie" thing when CD-based FMV filled games failed in the 90s.
