Forums - Gaming Discussion - VGChartz's RPG Census report! Understanding are love for this amazing genre

RPG's are my favorite favorite favorite genre.. sine playing FF2 on the SNES all those years ago and having the PS1 open the door to this ultimate genre i ahve become a whore and a slave for this genre dishing out all my time and money to Xxperiencing as many as possible, im sure there are many more like myself

but what is about this genre that keeps so many of us drooling over over playing the roles over emo pretty boys over and over and over agian? so i decided that it time we break down what we love some much about the genre. ive taken the time to break them down basic catorgories of 6, each catergory gives the bacic elements that make up the catory.

here thy are:

STORY - The Story involves the setting, characters and main goal of game. it explains the vast worlds history up till the point in which the game begins it, its sets mood. It gives us the main characters and there personalitiies whether they be protagonist or antagonist. It is the main reason behind any RPG as it guides us to the final conflict.

GAMEPLAY - Are battle systems turn based or Action based? is there a world map, seemless world or do you just choose loactions from a overview? How do are chracters grow, is by lv up, mastering differnt weapons? This is the involves parts og the game we actually play or have control of.

PRESENTATION - THIS IS NOT LIMITED TO GOOD VS BAD GRAPHICS!,. Is 2D or 3D? Anime or realism? it also involves different graphic styles like Cell shading, black white, sprits, chibi this is basically the look of the game.

SOUND - This involves music..is it boring, it epic or is just something you can bob your head too? sound effects like what does casting a fire spell sound like or sword hitting flesh. It also involves the voicework for the game..does it match the characters, is it annoying or oscar winning. This is sound

REPLAYABILITY - this involves things like side quest, optional dungeons/challenges, mini games, online play or coop. basically things that help Xxtend the game past the story.

STYLE - Do you perfer Japanese or Western styles RPG's

VG*Its simple - just rearrange these 5 catergories from most to least imporatant they will be given a point based on there place for example:

My List:

1. gameplay - place 1 gets 5 points

2. Presentation - place 2 gets 4 points

3. replayability - place 3 gets 3 points

4. sound - place 4 gets 2 points

5. story - place 5 gets 1 point

JRPG vs WRPG will have its ticks added +1 whenever somebodies votes for them

so  far:

VGCHARTZ"S RPG BREAKDOWN LIST

STO: llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

GAM: llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

PRE: llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

SOU: llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

REP: lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

JRPG: lllllllllllllll

WRPG: llll

* THINGS TO CONSIDER:

- when you vote...just vote dont think to hard if u have gameplay at the bottom it doesnt mean you hate gameplay it just means its the least important in your RPG Xxperience...and vice versa if u have a presentation in spot 1 ur not a graphics whore it just means you like a good presentation

- I am aware that each caterory has several thibgs grouped togheter and doesnt mean you like all of them for..for Xxample somebody can like Music a whole lot but not care to much Voice work..for right now just think  what full package caters to your feelings more.

-if your gonn debate amoung each other thats fine just make sure your choices a visable

JRPG JUNKIES RESPECT THE WESTERN RPG GUYS OK!!???

Thank you for your participation!

don forget JRPG or WRPG

1. Gameplay - it must be fun to play first and foremost.

2. Replayability - truly great games that you want to play again and again.

3. Story - It needs to be epic if possible, but if gameplay is masterful, a good story is alright,

4. Presentation - Depends...

5. Sound - Epic music is needed but its the least needed out of the above.

JRPG...

...

Great idea for a thread Xxain.

1. Gameplay
2. Story
3. Sound
4. Presentation

I guess JRPG.

"And yet, I've realized that maybe living a "decent" life means you won't ever have a "good" life."

1. gameplay(doesnt have to be innovative or anything, just fun or that doesnt bother me to play, if it did, I wouldnt play a game like that even if it had the other things good this is what I mean with putting gameplay first)
2. sound ( good executed tracks that can be listened out of the game, no catchy stupid beats for 10 year olds)
3. Presentation(I hate when a game looks like crap, but depending on the system I play I can tolerate it, SNES graphics on a game made today is a big NO on my psp or ps3, and I prefer realistic anime characters something like the latest FFs)
4. Story(it only has to be OK, and not stupid)
5. Replayability(just play them once and complete the game to a hight percentage if I liked it a lot, if its turn based I wont play it again because of the lack of action I would get on it, actually, Im too lazy to beat most games more than once)

JRPG over WRPG though I enjoy both.
