Forums - Gaming - ShenMue was originally a Sega Saturn game. Awesome graphics

I didnt knew this or maybe I have forgotten it but I just saw the graphics ot the beta.

I had difficulties to believe that Sega Saturn or Playstation  were able to do this. Especially with 0,5 Mb Cache for Textures and 500000 theoretical polygons

But it seems that this is legit because I found more links which atleast give it a little credibility:

I know that it doesnt look as good as DC but does someone remember games like Virtua Fighter were the bodies were like Lego builds or any other 32 Bit game. The faces here are so good. I know that Saturn was more powerful then PS1 and just hard to programm for. But this ?

On the last link there is a Pic of a Saturn CD with the name Project Berkley. Sega Saturn was designed in early 1994 with early 1994 technology I wasnt a big PC gamer at the time but were there Pc games which were as good graphically ? The faces are so good. The textures are so varied. look at the Kimono on the last Pic.  This is all realtime. The Video impressed me the most.

After seeing the video again I cant believe that this is Sega Saturn the animations and movements the faces look almost like on DC. It looks more like a very early ShenMue version for DC. What do you think is this a fake ? The Pics are possible but after seeing this in movement it seems impossible for all three consoles.

Now this is REALLY old news. I can remember reading about that in 2000 when the first Shenmue came out... ;)

In other old news: Mother 3 was a N64 title. Awful graphics, though.

You unlock the Saturn version video after you finish Shenmue II.

There was also a finished Saturn version of Virtua Fighter 3 that never saw the light of day.

It just annoys me how little fanfare Shenmue got since it was such an incredible game. If sega released these games on systems that had large fanbases back in the day they would have sold much better and we would be looking at a Shenmue 3 by now.

ARGH

Damn, the music is so stinking amazing.

consoles are always able to pull of some amazing stuff when pushed to their limits. This is just another example

Yeah, Genki even reused some of the SH-series codebase for the rushed DC port iirc.

Sonic Adventure also started out as a Saturn game, using the 3D engine from the museum portion of Sonic Jam.  It's working title was "Sonic RPG".
