Forums - Sales Discussion - Holy Hell hardware adjustments!

No need for an argument, all the major manufacturers use the term 'sold' to refer to sold through to the retailers as for them that is indeed a sale. The retailer buys the console off of the manufacturer.

A lot of confusion comes from when Sony used to report figures that were to their own warehouses and hadn't actually been sold to a retailer, which they no longer do.

The manufacturers don't have 100% accurate sellthrough sales and so don't usually report them, merely commenting on people like NPD's reports.

At least thats my understanding of the business.

Except Nintendo... Nintendo actually has their own tracking firm... which is apparently VERY good at sellthrough.

Possibly better then NPD I guess... because it tracks everything through special barcodes... so they can track exactly when each specific unit was sold.

funny this huge adjustment as SONY about 1 year ago said how mant they has Sold (not shipped) and it was over a million higher then what VGcharts had it at.....so now the PS3 is 2million units down from what it has actualy sold..lol GREAT!

Wii just hit 67million, SOLD not shipped

so now the numbers are even more off

did not sony say themselves they have sold over 32m ps3's compared to shipped 35m ps3's vgcharts is wrong, they have taken too much off the figures I am sure.

Sold = sold to retailiers.

Shipped = produced.

For Sony.  It's ridiculious but that's the terms they use.

It's in any of their financial reports back when they used to report "shipped."

wait hasn't this argument been done before??

i always thought shipped ment sold to retailer, and the sold statement meant sold to customer, but i don't wan't to start an argument or anything, so we shall just leave it at that.

Not to Sony.  Check Sony's financial reports.

It's not really an arguement no offense... it's stated clearly in their finanical reports... before like... 2008-9ish... since then they've been reporting "sales" which were to the stores.

Unless Sony says "Sales to End Users" or "Consumers" i'd treat anything they say as to stores until proven otherwise as it's consistant with their financial reporting.

Even if they say Customers... since the stores are in fact their Customers.

ok fair enough, and Rath you are right abou there being too much confusion, from what you guys say it sounds like nintendo uses the best strategy.

the funny thing is ninty doesn't have to spin because the wii is owning every console lol

I wouldn't say that.. it's just they don't have their own numbers tracking firm.  It's not like Nintendo is doing it to be more accurate or for the consumers.  I mean we weren't hearing this stuff or even knew they had a tracking company when they were getting their asses kicked.

It's just a really profitable buisness for them... they track stuff for a LOT of companies.

Heck they're so accurate afterall those recent adjustments were done because of their data.

Well Nintendo still reports shipped in their financial reports.

I just meant that Nintendo can produce sales to customers and occasionally does while the other two really can't without citing NPD.

They all report the same thing now... though Sony often calls it different for some reason.

I find my lack of faith with vgchartz disturbing now... those are vast adjustment numbers, though i still in the end, highly doubt wii will ever take that 50%, not that it matters it just wont.

Hmm... I seriously need to update my thread...
Argh!

This is invisible text!

adjustments aren't really that big of an issue. we see adjustments here every now and then. a few dozen thousands less here, a few dozen thousands added here and so on. happens regularly.

only issue now is the size of the adjustment. a few dozen thousands isn't so bad. but an adjustment of over a million for ps3, almost a million for x360 etc just made this site look really bad. many people would now think that the model being used by vgc is very amaturish (is that a word?) or very inaccurate/unreliable. either that or they'll say that vgc numbers are just being pulled out of the air somewhere and have thier fingers crossed hoping to get it right or at least near the predictions of others like NPD.

i bet many a vgc haters will definitely jump on this like a pack of hungry wolves.

no offense, but imo, to many, this site's reputation and credibility just went from hero to zero.

i on the other hand, still think that what ioi and friends are doing here is remarkable given that its not sponsored by any really huge company.

I'm with you on that one.

I now understand why the people on neogaf feel the way they do.

There is no justifying inaccuracies of this magnitude, not ever.

the slogan here should be; "Your guess is as good as ours!"
