Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Shortages of Wiis in the US

I was in GameStop the other day picking up NHM2 (they didn't have any at GameCrazy), and someone came in looking for a Wii.  I haven't heard any problems getting one in a long time, but apparently they have been sold out for nearly a week all around town.

Just wondering if it's a local thing, or if there are shortages all around the US?

If so, my guess, they are finally getting ready to release the Black version.

Black version sounds promising, they are preparing for a suprise maybe, putting posters up saying black wii now in stock, and people will be like "wow look at that".

Black version will launch with monster hunter 3, it's my guess.

Along the black boxarts for "hardcore" games.

But the sales don't seem to reflect that, unless Nintendo hasn't been shipping as much. I think if there were widespread shortages again we'd be hearing more about it.

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I don't think that points towards a black version. They wouldn't discontinue or hold back stock of the iconic white Wii just to release a black special edition.

More likely that the Wii's supply chain is still rattled from the insane December sales it saw in NA.

I disagree... Monster Hunter series is not anywhere near popular enough to warrent that in the US or Europe.

The ol' Patcher is right and all the Internet'll be eating crow soon?

I think they'll save the black Wii for when sales dip a bit, or competition like Natal comes out... I doubt Nintendo would just put it out there in some random Q1 timeframe.

They might let the inventory of white slip just prior.  They don't want a bunch of returns for people who just bough a white one to exchange it for a black one...

That said, you are probably right that it's probably just a momentary shortage caused by the holidays.  Would be interesting to hear from others though if they have Wiis in stock or not.  Either way, I am still curious if it's country wide, or just a local issue.
