Patcher has said some stupid things but they were completely reasonable in that video. Uncharted and more so Killzone 2 should have sold more. Why is it that Gears of War manages 6 million as a new IP but the PS3's two biggest games won't? I'm not really sure maybe it marketing or competition or a console with a diverse base. Whatever the reasons Sony's big games aren't selling as huge this generation as they did last.

this isnt all the way true.. SONY developed games minus GT have NEVER been big sellers.

I know but why not? Why was the xbox able to create some phenomenal sellers on a 24 million install base but Sony hasn't? Whats keeping Sony games from taking off and selling 5 or 10 million plus?

@CGI

I was more going along the lines of new IP's. Of course we know that established IP's like GT are going to sell. But why hasn't Uncharted, Killzone (not a new IP but total reinvention of franchise), LBP, Resistance, Infamous or any other new PS3 title exploded in sales? Don't get me wrong they have sold well but were talking about mega blockbusters here. Besides GT what other Sony exclusive do you think is going to get past 5 million? Do you think GT or any other exclusive will get past 10 million?

I don't know maybe its the recession or maybe the competition is just a lot tougher this time around?

Well, in truth Microsoft hasn't put out a new IP that exploded in sales either. This is why i don't get why Sony is judged so harshly while Micorsoft is praised in that area.

For me though, I prefer a plethora of games that are quality and fun, to one that just sells 10 million or so.

True there aren't many exclusive games on the 360 that have sold 5 million plus, only three that I can think of right off the top of my head. But what I don't understand is why the huge difference between the way GoW sold versus say Uncharted 2 and more closely Killzone 2. All three games were praised for their graphics, had amazing reviews and were exclusives. So whats the big difference between them?

If you look at a lot of 360 exclusives like L4D and ME they have PC counterparts. I think if those didn't exist you would see a lot of these games selling around 5 million too. Although thats completely speculation on my part. Just to clarify I'm not saying that Uncharted is a disappointment I'm just asking why didn't its sales explode? I'm especially baffled about Killzone 2, I expected it to have amazing legs and to do GoW numbers.

@XXain

So do you think they will get better results if they turn back to their original fanbase and start making the games they want?

@warmachine

CGI said everything I was going to. Plus GoW was not a launch title. It was advertised pretty well though.

There are only 3 exclusive XBox360 games that have sold more than 5 million.  One of them is Halo 3, and it is a phenomenon.  The other 2 games are Gears of War and Gears of War 2.  And that's been another phenomenal series.

Most exclusive games on the XBox360 and PS3 don't sell anywhere near that well.  By most people's measurements, Left 4 Dead 1/2 and Mass Effect on the XBox360 must also have disappointing sales.

What's the difference between the mega sellers?  XBox360 caught a break with Gears of War.  Its a huge franchise now.  It's a quality game.  It appeals to tons of people.  But it's absolute BS that exclusive games on the PS3 don't sell.  Seriously people, check the charts.

PS3:  http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=&console=PS3&publisher=&genre=&minSales=0&results=50&sort=Total

Take out Halo and Gears of War, and the XBox360 list doesn't look so hot anymore.  Microsoft had a huge hit on their hands with those games.  It has nothing to do with being on the XBox360 vs the PS3.  It has everything to do with making an excellent game that catches on with fans.

You make it sound like it's so easy to do.  Microsoft did it, why can't Sony?  But it's not easy to do, otherwise Fable 2, Forza 2, Left 4 Dead 2/3, and Mass Effect would have all sold 5+ million.  But none of them broke the 5 million mark.  Only 1 broke 4 million, 1 broke 3 million, and Mass Effect is just above 2 million.

gametrailer again??

Aren't those the people who justified U2 by saying it didn't "revolutionize" much... and then go and give ME2 much higher score despite having the same issue?

If you read my other posts you would have known I already said all of that. I also said that a lot of those exclusive games like L4D and Mass Effect also had PC counterparts taking away from their sales. Its not too hard to imagine that L4D would have sold 5 million if it was a complete exclusive what with it having sold almost 3 million on the 360 alone.

If you also read my other posts you would see that it has nothing to do with PS3 vs 360 but more to do with local multiplayer which games like Killzone 2 and Uncharted lack.

Thinking of the really big sellers this generation I think I may have an explanation for what sets the mega blockbusters apart from the good seller, and this applies to all consoles.

Looking at the best sellers especially on the Wii and 360 I see one common aspect. Split screen/local multi-player.

Both GoW and Halo have split-screen co-op and multiplayer as well as LAN abilities. Mario Kart Wii, NSMB Wii, SSBB, all these games have some form of local multiplayer. When your friends come over to play you play Halo 3 or Brawl because their one of the few games that still let you sit next to your friend and play.

If you want to make a huge seller you need a game with amazing gameplay, single player, co-op, online multiplayer and split screen.

Unfortunately these are missing in a lot of the PS3 exclusives. Not to say single player games don't sell but it seems to be almost impossible to pull off the mega blockbuster this gen with a single player only game.

I agree take Ratchet and Clank for example I think that the game is a mazing vusially and story wise, and gameplay is also fun but sony failed to make as good as mario or zelda, if a crack in time had local multiplayer like golden eye or perfect dark the game would have been gold, same goes for killzone it can't grab the younger generation without split screen, kids get to experience halo and groups in parties, sleeps over and so, they have a blast playing it and they go and buy it, that's way halo and modern warfare are as big.

.........................................ok I'll say it, screw the f**king kinds, bunch of mindless dumbasses that often always go out of thier way to ruin games, so sony's problem isn't thier games don't "sell", it's they have yet to creat a game that will "sell".

would have never brought killzone 2 if it was as kid friendly as halo I M F**KING O

LOL, sales sale sales, its one thing to say a game don't sell and it sucks, but to say it don't deserves to be noticed or awarded because it has low sales is completely ridiculous and backwards.

The best part is if it was not for Uncharted 2 Demons Soul's would have won game of the year on most credible sites and we all know how low Demon's Souls sales are.
I think we look too much into sales, and the problem is not Sony, its with people expecting too much and being unrealistic, people that don't really understand what went down last gen with the PS2 and why its 3rd party software sold so well.

personally, imo, when the game of the year is outsold 3:1 by a generic shooter on the same platform in the same region by a generic shooter (CoD:MW2), there is a problem.
just what it is idk, but my Finger is starting to point to the consumer.

Consumer, I am dissapoint.
